Preparing for a new baby is both exciting and stressful. Many decisions have to be made by you about every aspect of their life, from choosing the best car seat to picking out the layette. You’ve most likely thought about what brand of diapers you will buy and how many you will need, and, if you’re like the vast majority of new parents out there, then you have probably decided upon disposable diapers without ever giving it a second thought. There is an alternative, however: cloth diapers. Cloth diapers are good for the environment; they’re better for baby, easy to use, economical, and convenient. Did you know that disposable diapers do not breakdown in our landfills? The chemicals that make them absorbent are not biodegradable. Consider using cloth diapers instead of disposables because the absorbent gel inside is toxic and has been know to cause health problems like allergies, such as asthma, and skin irritations, such as eczema. Children who are cloth diapered are less likely to have diaper rash and other skin irritations, because children in cloth are changed more frequently. Cloth Diapers have evolved! Modern cloth diapers are not like your mother’s cloth diapers; they can be cute, colorful and fun. Today’s cloth diapers are made from a variety of both organic and conventional absorbent materials, including: Cotton, Bamboo and Hemp and are often secured with snaps, or hook-and-loop, like Velcro. One must also consider the economic reasons for using cloth diapers: since they are reusable, they can last for successive children. Never having to run to the grocery store or pharmacy when you run out of disposable diapers is also a plus, since you already have a stash of clean cloth diapers on hand.
