Briar & the Hare by Lavender & Lark

A tiny, ornately felted egg gifted to each child on Easter morning is a tradition in our family. They wake to find it placed on their pillow or waiting in a basket by the bed. Each year when the first hints of spring start to show we make our 'Easter Tree' out of an old branch and hang our little collection of eggs. This year the story is woven further as it is discovered that Willem, the wee Faery artist, with his brightly coloured paints is the maker of these treasures. Then they are carried in little baskets by the Spring maidens who deliver them to boys and girls in the quiet dawn. Sometimes they are assisted on their journeys by a hare or bird.

Briar & the Hare are OOAK soft sculpture art dolls. They are entirely hand stitched and needle sculpted from natural fibers (with the exception of the Faery's wings). They are not attached and can be displayed and posed separately. The Faery maiden has a wire armature wrapped in wool and hand stitched in cotton tricot skin allowing her to be repositioned. She is clothed in a billowy cotton dress made from an antique hankie, worn over a hand dyed silk slip and cotton undergarments. Her shoes and cap are made from wool felt. Her tiny features are hand embroidered and her hair is Tibetan lamb's wool. She is wearing, about her shoulders, a handwoven egg basket of paper wrapped wire. She stands 6" tall.

The Hare stands 13.5" tall. He has a firmly needle felted body over a wire armature with wool and silk fur. His hind legs are felted in place so he cannot be repositioned other then to move his head. His saddle is made from wool felt with needle felted detail.

On Easter morn at early dawn
before the cocks were crowing
I met a bob-tail bunnykin
and asked where he was going.
"Tis in the house and out the house
a-tispy, tipsy-toeing,
Tis round the house and 'bout the house
a-lighlty I am going."
"But what is that of every hue
you carry in your basket?"
"Tis eggs of gold and eggs of blue;
I wonder that you ask it.

"Tis chocolate eggs and bonbon eggs
and eggs of red and gray,
For every child in every house
on bonny Easter day."
He perked his ears and winked his eye
and twitched his little nose;
He shook his tail -- what tail he had --
and stood up on his toes.
"I must be gone before the sun;
the east is growing gray;
Tis almost time for bells to chime." --
So he hippety-hopped away.
