about us & our diapers
We believe in clean, natural living. And we also believe that the best
way to change the world is to be the change we want to see.
When we found out we were having another baby, we discussed the idea of
using cloth diapers. We didn't know anyone who was using them, but we
liked the idea of never running out to the drugstore in the middle of
the night because one of us had forgotten there was only had one diaper
left.
Then we saw a show about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (read more about it here)
and we were shocked and disgusted. We decided then that we couldn't
use disposable diapers and feel good about it. As much as possible, we
have tried to eliminate or limit our use of plastic "throw-away"
convenience items.
When we decided to start making our own diapers, we made it a priority
for our diapers to be as "green" as possible. All of the bamboo used
in scuttlebutts diapers is certified 100% organic. No harmful pesticides or
fertilizers are used in the production of our bamboo. That means fewer
deadly chemicals seeping into the ground and water.
Because our diapers spend a lot of time against a very precious thing,
a baby's bottom, we wanted to be sure that our materials are not only
safe for the planet, but safe for baby. We looked high and low and
eventually found bamboo textiles that are Oeko-tex 100 certified. Oeko-tex
certified materials are tested for formaldehyde content, the presence
of pesticides, extract-able heavy
metals, chlorinated organic carriers and preservatives such as
pentachlorophenol and tetrachlorophenol. The tests also include checks
for any MAC amines in azo dyestuffs and allergy-inducing dyestuffs. In addition, the
use of flame-retardant and biocide finishes is prohibited. All of that
testing ensures that Scuttlebutts are clean and natural. Gentle on
baby and gentle on our planet.
All of our products are shipped in a waterproof polymailer, this is the only way we can ensure that your beautiful diapers are not affected by the weather while en route to your mailbox. However, in our efforts to reduce our plastic consumption, we will not package products in a second plastic bag. If you'd prefer to have your items packaged in a plastic zip top bag in addition to the mailer, please let us know and that can be arranged.
If you have any questions about our materials, please email us.
Thanks for looking and thanks for buying hand-made! Brad, Jen, Cole, & baby Luke
