Star Maiden

Star Maiden refers to 2 major characters in history - A Native American Fairy-like figure who descended with her 11 sisters from the heavens in a woven basket;
and Astraea, the last of the Greek Gods to live on earth with the humans before ascending into the heavens to become the constellation Virgo.

With this stocking, The Enchanted Glen is celebrating them both!
 


Astraea

Astraea (meaning "Star-Maiden" in Greek), is often depicted holding scales, she is revered as the goddess of justice.
Astraea was the daughter of Zeus and Themis, the original goddess of justice. According to Greek mythology Astraea was the last of the immortals to have lived on the earth, and when mankind became wicked, she retreated to the heavens where we see her and her scales of justice in the sky as the two constellations Virgo & Libra.

The Star Maiden legend has been told for generations among many different tribes of Native American Peoples.

A few books have been written publishing the tales and have accredited the legend to various tribes.

This is one of my favorite versions of the legend - featuring a hunter named Waupee the White Hawk.

Waupee stumbles upon the star maidens while hunting and desires to make the youngest maiden his wife.

The legend tells of the struggles that the couple face while raising their child between Earth and the heavens.
