Hi everyone,
I'd like to have a discussion regarding how to handle BiNs, auctions and lotteries on HCM. Currently, the way it's set up, when a customer wins a BiN, auction or lottery, their information is recorded in the 'buyer' field on the product listing, but an order is not created until the customer goes through the entire checkout process with the item. I designed it this way so that, in the spirit of HC Multi, the customer could place additional items in her cart and then check out with everything all at once.
This setup has some disadvantages though: 1) it is a bit confusing for the buyers and sellers, who don't understand why the BiN / auction / lottery has ended but no order is showing up in the order history; 2) the seller is not able to flag buyers if they don't go through the checkout process and create the order.
That leaves a couple of choices:
1) Leave the setup as-is, but add the capability for the seller to flag the buyer from the product listing page (i.e. in the column where it says 'buyer', you would be able to click on the buyer's email address and flag from there).
2) Change the setup so that the order is created as soon as the BiN button is clicked or the auction / lottery ends. This means that if the buyer did want to purchase other things from your store, she would need to fill up a separate cart and check out in a separate order.
3) Change the setup as above, but also include the capability of combining orders. This would be the most complicated option, of course, and would a) take longer to code, b) still be potentially confusing for customers.
If we went with option 2 or 3, I could probably also add the capability of allowing qty's greater than 1 on the BiN listings.
Or, if anyone has any other ideas, please feel free to chime in.
I'm taking a poll and encouraging discussion on this thread.
Personally, my only issue with MC is when there is an "add to cart" function instead of a straight BIN function. My reason for this is oversells and general confusion and frustration. I know this is up to the seller to choose these options, but I wonder if an ATC function should even be an option? I much prefer either a BIN or Hold listing as a consumer.
Option 2 seems to ruin the idea of HCM, and Option 3 I understand would be very time consuming and may not make things much better. _________________ Amy, mama to Carter (3) and a bit of sugar arriving 2/10

It's so funny because that was set up in order to address seller complaints of things getting taken out of stock when payment was never made. This way, the seller doesn't need to take any action for abandoned carts and the items aren't taken out of stock unless payment is completed. I guess there really isn't a perfect solution -- but I'm thinking the Hold option is pretty close?

i know option 3 would be the hardest to implement but I think in the end would be the best. it sounds alot like ebay where when you win or buy it is a done deal, order set up in your selling page and in the buyers win page. then if they do buy or win anything else the seller can combine those orders and send one invoice with combined shipping.
i think that way once the item is bought or won everyone can see it on their respective pages and know where it has gone, who has won it, and so on. there are no floating mystery sells that you not quite sure what is going on with them. _________________ ~Nikki

I like #3 best, but if it ended up taking too long to code, then go with #1. Frequently it happens where auction/lottery winners add more items to their cart, and I know customers like this functionality. _________________ Mom to three princesses, ages 5, 3, & 1.

So, does that option then make it so that the first person to check out is the "winner" of the said item, regardless of whether they were the first to place it in their cart? If so, then that really makes no sense for HCM if you want to indeed purchase more than one item because you wouldn't want to wait. Sorry, I don't use HCM stores all that often, so forgive my lack of knowledge! _________________ Amy, mama to Carter (3) and a bit of sugar arriving 2/10

It's really meant for 'normal' items, not high demand items.

I'm pretty new to HC and am still trying to figure it all out as a seller. I do have multi and besides lottery and auction, I'm not even sure which way I've listed?? I know there are different options, and honestly I think I just choose one to continue
Having said all that, I think consumer ease is top priority...I mean, we want customers to shop a lot so we should make it easy for them I agree with Nikki's suggestion - some type of code that allows buyer and seller to see exactly what has transpired, when, and what actions need to be taken, i.e. payments due, etc. _________________ Jen, WAHM to DS (4 years old!) and DD (10-17-06)

part of what i like about multi is it is non-hyena friendly. i get a fair amount of non-hyena interest in my store, so whatever makes it easiest for the customer is what i would prefer. _________________ Carolyn, mama to Adam (3/06) and Jeremy (3/08)

I voted option 3, but I agree...whatever would be most buyer friendly is best! _________________ J Tribe Creations ~BLOG~ RHONDA~ tradin',music lovin',sewing hippie WAHM
Celebrating 2 yrs on HC this OCTOBER!
What if you did option one, but also added a function so that the store owner can choose a "standard" ATC type listing or a single BIN type listing (which would take them straight to check out.) I personally don't have a problem with the way it is right now, but for the people that would like a change, they could choose that. No idea how complicated that would be to code! ;p but I thought I would just throw it out there! =) _________________ ~*Kelley*~
