We have a LOT of chickens here & I've been cooking them on a pretty regular basis for meals. I've found it's super easy to make your own broth after dinner. Just take all the leftover chicken bones, carcass, etc. Just toss it all into your crockpot, add 5 cups of water & set on low. It works great to do this after dinner & it's done when you wake up I just strain out the bones, pout the broth into a mason jar & store in the fridge. It's great for soup base, use in breads, etc. And it saves $ b/c you already had the chicken/chicken bones.
I was in town at the grocery store the other day & noticed that the natural/organic chicken broth (in the boxes) was over $4. Since we raise chickens, I make mine significantly cheaper. It's cheaper to make this with leftover bones/parts even if you buy your meat at the store. Often you can get a whole chicken MUCH cheaper than purchasing parts. Even a small boiler works great b/c you can usually get that for under four bucks (& when you make your own broth, you don't need to pay another $3-4 for broth if you need it).
Hope this helps someone out _________________ Krystyna, hippie wife & mom
