When I tag my items, I try to think of everything that would help describe the item, even to include all the colors in a colorway used to make woolies, in case someone is, say, searching for something purple. They may not wish to have a pair of shorties that has purple in it, but my item would hopefully show up and who knows, they may decide that it IS something they want/need right now?
I also know that several of the items listed that people claim they can't find here are items sold on HC, but not being able to find them when searching is, as mentioned, most likely due lack of tagging. Some of the items used could be given different names/titles, such as snack and sandwich bags...maybe a seller is tagging their item as a snack "holder" and the buyer is searching for a snack "bag" and, thus, the one tagged as a "holder" never shows up.
I know that when I search for something on Ravelry, I get items that I can't figure out why they popped up, until I look at the name of the person posting it. For example, maybe I'm looking for "cupcake" and one result is a scarf. When I look at the account holder who posted that item, it's by Cupcake Designs. Maybe our tags need to be able to pick up any words noted, so that if someone is looking for snack bags, the seller that calls them snack holders will still come up because it is responding to the word "snack" on its own.
As previously noted, not only with sewing, but definitely with knit items for older kids, the cost for those items will give most people sticker shock...LOL!...so that's why they are hard to find, as they just sit in stock. Having them made as a custom, especially a YYMN custom, is probably the only way to get many of these type of items and that's why they don't show up when doing searches.
I agree with the point made about custom slots not being found when someone may be searching for these type of items for older kids and that it's hard to note everything that a custom slot could cover. Not sure how to change that situation...maybe those searching just need to include the word "custom" or "YYMN" when searching so that they can see who would be able/willing to at least discuss the item the buyer is looking for. _________________ ~Mary, Mom to N, grandma to R (10/08), E (4/11)

I have a hard time getting results. It's possible there isn't enough tagging by sellers, but where Etsy gives you too much stuff (even things that I can't seem to figure out how they matched my search, lol) it seems HC gives too little results. HC searches seam to require an exact phrasing or set of words to get what I want. For example I might want paperless towels, but that won't return many results so I have to retry with paper less towels (3 words instead of 2) or unpaper towels ... etc. I've just realized that I could be missing out on things here at HC because I didn't use the right set of words.
Also, custom slots don't always pop up because it can be near impossible to tag them for every possible thing you'd be willing to make. I think a lot of people don't realize they can ask someone and even if they do sometimes it feels uncomfortable to do so...like you're putting the seller in an uncomfortable place. Custom bin slots are nice, but those don't always pop up unless you're looking specifically for one.
Even though I know a lot of the stuff people are listing is available on HC it doesn't seem like it's 'regularly' available (ie stocked and ready to ship)
A few people have mentioned they make the requested items and I even noticed a few people point out they have them stocked at other places...so that's the big question 'Why are they stocked elsewhere and not here?'
Just trying to throw some more thoughts out there. |

I thought of something else I'd love to see here; wood or pottery salt and pepper shakers. I bought pottery salt and pepper shakers on Etsy and they are fantastic, I would have never checked on HC because I've never seen them here, it was easier to just check on Etsy because there's such a large variety of them on there.
Mary, excellent point, I for one don't use the tags like I should, sometimes I forget to even put them in *blush*. When you list on Etsy it's easier to put them in it seems, less likely to forget. _________________ Genevieve

Maybe a different direction on the topic, but the categories on the home page could be much more detailed. This would allow sellers more options in which to list their products and buyers more ideas on where to look too.
FYI: under knitting and supplies the only categories are
hand-dyed yarn
stitch markers
knitting needles
cestari
No knitting bags?
Jewelry and accessories should be split into 2 categories and fleshed out as well. Right now these items are all together
necklaces
bracelets
rings
earrings
handbags
totes
scarves
purses
wallets
ereader cases
I have ereader cases but they are not in the list, I also have purses, but they are not showing up. Could be the case with a lot of sellers here.
Edited to add, what about custom as a sub category under each one too? It would really put focus on the fact that a lot of sellers do custom work., which is part of the draw for HC
Edited again to add:Oh boy I am really caught up in it now LOL
Generally, in other selling venues, there are drop down menus to allow you to select a category you want your item to go in, and then in some there are additional drop downs so you can select a sub category.
When I first go to a new on line store, the categories are the first place I look, so as to not be overwhelmed. The more categories the better. Then I can familiarize myself with what is available. _________________ Karen

On etsy I look for supplies (business and craft), jewelry (hand MADE metal work etc., not hand assembled bulk pieces~ I love artwork jewelry) and older girl clothes.
I have lots of travel suitable toys
I, like others, do larger size girl's skirts and dresses by custom (short turn around) as they sit in stock, otherwise.
I find searching here deplorable, so basically only go to shops I know, and the one thing I would come to HC over Etsy for would be yarn.

Searching is the main feature that draws me to Etsy over here. Like people have said, you have to get the exact phrasing right for things to show up here. Etsy search draws from the tags, the item name and the description, IRRC. That's why you see super long item names with multiple words meaning the same thing. It increases your search results. _________________ Kate

I would love to see something other than more diapers!
In all seriousness, HC has become absolutely inundated with diapers and diapering products while other businesses are being choked out. Just look at the top ten on "Where Are the Hyenas" list at any given time- I've been tracking it for weeks and it has come out to about 80% diaper makers at any given time. Look at the Featured Shops- averaging 70% diapers and diapering supplies at any given time.
Like a couple of previous seamstresses said, we MAKE clothes for bigger kids (5T-8, 10, etc), and it just SITS! 90% of my Black Friday goods last November were big kid sizes that'd been just sitting for months- some close to a year. When these goods just sit and the diapering goods become the main commodity on HC, those of us that do other types of things leave. HC just isn't very profitable for such things anymore and it makes me very sad. If I had friends and family looking to buy diapers and would like a plethora of choices, I would absolutely send them here. Otherwise, I search elsewhere. _________________ Meg- Label-free, loving wifey to J, WAHMama to A(6), G(4), R(2), and A(BRAND NEW!)

I meant that it's easy to stock items as a seller - sorry for any confusion.
I also like that there is such variety on etsy and hence the pool of people looking on there is broader. I do associate HC with babywear and diapering more than anything else. I have an 8mo old baby girl so still buy things on HC but I am inundated with diapering yarn so really only look for items such as baby pinafores and interlock bloomers and mostly on Spots at that. I requested customs for such items last year on HC and had a bad experience though all my other transactions have gone smoothly.
My son is 3yo and I haven't bought him anything on here in quite a while. And if I do, it would most likely be advocacy tees or something via the co-op board for olders.

Yes, tagging here on HC is a problem. Most sellers seem to rely on word of mouth and the stocking calendar than using the tags for searching. On Etsy, they stress using all 14 tags. Here, I rarely see more than four or five, and rarely are they the tags I would have used. _________________ Shannon, wahm to 7

as a knitter and dyer I try to use all the tags and then some.
For bigger knits I don't mind stocking it but the time it takes to knit it and then have it sit to wait for that perfect buyer makes me sad. Plus the price tag attached to it. I don't want to go too low and not compensate for my time and yarn used but not overprice it and have people think I am nuts to have such a high priced item.
As for customs I usually stock a slot every month with TOKW and it's usually a MYMN but I am always open for YYMN. 99% of my customs were from messages just asking me if I could do this or that or something they saw me knit in my gallery.
I love knitting hats and warmers etc and love a change of knitting. I say don't be afraid to ask. The worst I can say is sorry no I can't do that BUT I know this knitter can for you and refer you to a friend.

It's sad to hear that so many big sizes sit - and mentioned by some of my favourite sellers!!
I honestly gave up looking because we are now in the "big kid" sizes (5T). I loved so many of our HC items and would have loved to have the same thing in bigger sizes, but as mentioned previously - so many diapering items!
Things I look for at Etsy include things like household items (tea towels etc.) and right now I'm browsing for birthday party theme ideas.
It's really nice that there are customs always available, but honestly - I have no idea what I want until I see it. All my purchases here were impulse buys. I see it, I fall in love, I buy it!
I'm stopping by today because a friend is expecting, so I have a reason to shop for the little little ones, but it has been a long time since I've taken a look at the Calendar. I used to browse the Calendar a couple times a day. _________________ WOHM to DD (10/07) - happily married since 05/05 to a DH I never see

I HATE the search function on here. I NEED to search by sizes. I understand there may be a range within a size. But if I can't search for "size 6" or "2T" I have to go through every instock shirt or whatever it is. It seems like there should be checkbox field for listing items so you ca use the option to check the sizes or equivalent sizes that you are listing. Or like the other day I was lloking for a skein of some kind of yarn but I needed a 4 oz skein not a 3.5. There has to be some way to tell the search that you want BOTH words together also. If you look up handdyed and shirt you are likely to get every handdyed item and every shirt... THIS is why I end up on etsy - I can find the things that are there. What I don't like there is the overwhelming 5000 pages of results,LOL! _________________ ~Melissa

There has been mention about clothing for kids as well as being reasonably priced. I am clearancing out my TEJA Kids summer sundresses for girls in sizes 2-5 and they are only $10. Unfortunately, since the clearancing will only go on thru 7/4, I don't have time to get it all up here. I have them set to go at my Artfire store. I would like to patronize HyenaCart and if you want to buy a dress (or two!) I will transfer it over here for you. The dresses (as well as the rest of my clearance items) are here: http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/TEJA/0/0/223615 _________________ SAHM mommy to Thomas (12), Twinnies Erika and Julia (7), and Andrew (2)
