True on the hotdogs thing, but fat is a connective tissue and its in organs and skin. So liver is connective tissue. Connective tissue is not just tendons or ligaments _________________ Ranae

I've been ruminating over this for a bit. It's totally revolting and appalling to me that such a thing would even be considered edible, and worse that it's intended for the consumption of children. I'm disgusted. It doesn't matter how the method is spun to appear "ok" and fine. There's nothing fine about dressing something up that cannot be sold in its original state, just to make a buck on it and feed it to kids. Treating it with ammonia makes it all the worse. Human beings should not be consuming ammonia, even it's cleverly watered-down with hydroxide at the end.
Maybe getting Piper and Stella to help pick out and put together their lunches each night would help. Start with sensible choices at the grocery store. It'd still encourage independence, and get them involved in basic food preparation. You could also help them understand why making their own lunches is better for them.
Hope you hear good news back from the school. Sadly, unless heaps of parents write en masse, there's little chance you'll get a super-straight answer. I could be wrong... _________________ Denise/Veggiewitch Lucky Mama to 4 Elflings

| Thank you for sharing Carrie. I am in the same boat as you. Our entire school district (and we have only 1 within a 30 mile radius) is a Title 3 district granting over 50% of it's enrollment free or reduced lunches. My daughter, like yours, occassionally eats a school lunch. It's part of her independence to choose a few meals a month to buy versus packing a lunch. I will be contacting my daughter's principal as well and trying to find out more about this and it's role in our district. I would love to hear what reply, if any, you get from your e-mail. Keep us posted! |

She never responded. I have no idea why... but now, she gets to see me in person to:
A. give me the answer to my email; and
B. tell me why she ignored my email. |

I have been following this story and it makes me sick that this meat is not good enough for McDonalds or Taco Bell and is ILLEGAL in the UK for human consumption, but our government has no problem serving it to our children.
Fury does not even describe the feeling that gives me.
And I am far from being food picky..... _________________ ~Nikki

Me either. This has me very upset. Very. Even more so, because I'm NOT a total foodie. I'm not above a frozen pizza for lunch - or McDonalds.
But dang! Where's the line? This is alpo... LITERALLY!! And I feed my animals Science Diet - so that's better than what my kids get at lunch!! |

Hey guys, i did not read the article here, but have been following the pink slime story for years...dou you know it is not just school lunches? if you are buying ground beef that is not freshly ground in the buther shop...there is a good chance your "fresh" ground beef has pink slime in it. 70% of all ground beef in the us has it. so, buy fresh, buy local. and, not all meat is treated with ammonia, it is used not to keep it pink, but to kill the bacterial contamination that is inherint in the pink slime making process. there is more contact with skin and the outside parts of an animal as the skin and fat is separated from the flesh...and that is where the ecoli is. the first batches of the slime was contaminated...so they started treating it by flooding it with the ammonia soluion to sterilize the slime.
We dont eat it, ever. and i really resent that it is in our food supply unlabled.

And I am far from being food picky..... | YUP YUP & YUP! the Government does NOT care about our health!!! When the people in office start eating this for lunch let me know. They won't though. Even if I didn't homeschool my kids they would NOT be eating school lunches & if I couldn't make there lunch, I'd pull them from the school & go to Albany & visit the politicians with my kids _________________ Melissa~ Wife to King Arthur, Queen of my Home, Knitter, Homeschooler, SAHM, Somewhat WAHM (if you count ebay) and mom to 7 great kiddos!!!

d. | I'm glad I buy local. I used to buy walmart meat I'm currently looking to buy 1/2 cow from a local farm The older I get the more I realize we need to eat natural & healthy if I want my kids to live! _________________ Melissa~ Wife to King Arthur, Queen of my Home, Knitter, Homeschooler, SAHM, Somewhat WAHM (if you count ebay) and mom to 7 great kiddos!!!

Glad our main meat supply is deer hubby brings home, and we butcher ourselves. Other than that, it's mostly fish (gag!) that hubby and his brother catch. Once in a while poultry, but even the last of that we had was duck that we skinned ourselves. _________________ Jessy, Happily Married SAHM to Kaylee (Oct 06,) Alyssa (June 08) and Bubby (Dec 09,) and Tommy (Sept 11)
