I hate taking the girls in for physcials. I feel so judged

I'm a healthcare professional myself, but I hate going to the doctor... because I am so not mainstream in my parenting.

The doctor thinks my 8 yr old should be evaluated for developmental delays. Her speech is a little difficult to understand, but then me and my sister were the same way. She thinks McKenna could be on the autism specrtum. I guess she is a little introverted and maybe not as worldly as other 8 year olds who go to regular school.

Plus she walks on her toes... maybe she ought to see the people she recomended for physical development.

I often feel the same way when I take the kids in. But I try to remember that they truely think they are helping me.

Last year when I finally broke down and took my son in for a ADHD evaluation the DR's really surprised me. They said that my son was thriving in a homeschool enviroment and would never had made it in public school without meds becuase they just don't have time to give him the one on one time he needs. And they have realy helped me work with him better at home. I hope you will get similar results if you decide to take her in.

Why would your child's medical issues be a judgement on you?

I would get the evaluations done - the walking on the toes is concerning. This is a good time to intervene if there is an issue.

I dont think your kids possible medical issues are a bad reflection on you as a parent.
I have a 9 yo dd with Aspergers, OCD, and mood disorder. We do home school, and I am grateful I made this choice, because the contamination issues of a public school would be too much for her. She was treated for speech thru developmental preschool, for 3 and 4, and then,went to the school for speech, once a week, while we home schooled kindy. it really helped with articulation. I was just asking about having her evaluated again, because her articulation is still an issue, as if she hasnt progressed much since she was 5 or 6. I do not feel anyone is judging me, when i have to take her in. Her docs know i am not a medically driven person, but we have worked well as a team. She is now on a mediction, ( 3rd one) for her OCD, and she is doing much better. In my opinion, it is all about doing what you think is right for your kid, not if you are crunchy or mainstream.

Toe walking in an 8 year old can be an issue. It never hurts to get evaluated. Again, i dont think it is judging. I think the docs really want to help you, and your children, and it is your job, as a mother, to do what is needed, even if it is out of your comfort level a little bit.

My son has a long list of medical issues, and we spend a few hours a week in therapy. Is it my fave thig to do? NOPE. i HATE IT! However, is it what my son needs. YES Ma'am! So i put aside my own opinion of the medical profession, and do what i need to do.

but yeah, I agree with everyone else. Don't let it get to you. They think they are helping and getting testing just to make sure may end up the best thing, if for no other reason but to rule it out

I believe in natural health whole heartedly BUT, there is a reason people are living longer and the human population is thriving. Medical science does deserve some credit. I think if a doctor is concerned, go with it and see what happens. You may end up not agreeing, thats OK but, if there was something that needed to be treated, than your childs life would benefit. There are tons of natural options out there once you have the diagnosis. Working with both a naturopath and a MD could be a great combination, if there was something to be treated.

I agree with previous posters. I don't think there is anything wrong with getting an evaluation done. You can still decide which course (if any!) of treatment or follow up is best for your family.

Can someone tell me what the concern is with toe-walking? Two of my brothers and I all do it, and my youngest DS does as well.

Dh is always teasing me, but I didn't know that it was a sign of something???? I *think* I'm pretty normal. LOL

I have a cousin who toe walked until she was 4 or 5 and there is no obvious issues with her, other than being a teenage girl now LOL. jk.

I'd be willing to bet it is a sensory issue (for me). DS and I are very "icked" by the way some things feel and/or sound. And of course, after I saw this, I paid attention and I REALLY REALLY hate the *sound* of walking. :S

I used to toe walk in my bare feet when I was younger. It was a sensory issue for me. McKenna does it in shoes, though, too.

The toe walking can be concerning. It is called tippy toe syndrome. I just had a friend whose son had to have achilles heel surgery to correct it. In some cases like previous posters said it can be early sign of autism, but I have heard of it more so being a achilles heel issue.
