Well hello there! After a LONG no-internet stint I'm back! I had no idea where to address this, I couldn't find much info on the web about it...I know lots of you raise chickens though so it's worth a shot!
I'm almost positive I'm pregnant, I'm 5-7 days late on very regular cycles for the last 6 months. I have some digital tests on the way, but they're not here yet so that's why I say almost positive. Anywho- getting to the part regarding poultry... This Friday our chicks come in and I was curious as to if an expecting mom should put this off? I mean are chickens like cats:toxoplasmosis?
I know I'm being a paranoid dummy, but I'd rather know ahead of time of any potential risks related to chicken rearing and pregnancy. _________________ Niki

As far as I know there are no reasons why an expecting mama couldn't raise chickens, as long as you're using good common sense....not lifting heavy feeders or waterers, not over doing it with cleaning, and washing up after being around them. I have never heard of any special circumstance, but maybe someone else has. Congratulations on both the chickens and the coming little one _________________ Tawny

That's what I was hoping to hear! We only plan on starting with 3-4 chicks, so no lifting with these, thank goodness. Thanks Tawny! _________________ Niki

I don't think it should be a problem. We got our chicks in August and I got pregnant in September. I've never heard of any problems with pregnancy and chickens.
It's nice to see you! Enjoy your chicks! _________________ Under the Hill Crafts

Probably salmonella would be more of a concern but you could get that making dinner and not washing your hands. have fun with the chooks! _________________ ~June

Hey Niki - congrats! Our chickens are coming soon too. I've been reading everything i can get my hands on abotu chicks/chickens and have never read anything about not handling them while pregnant. just wash your hands for the salmonella risk but you should do that pregnant or not anyhow _________________ ~Bonnie~
