Janel's oldest son, Will (6) has recently been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer - please keep them in your thoughts and prayers as the deal with the journey ahead.

Will had an MRI this morning and their neighbour (an oncologist) called them with the results. The chemo shrunk Will's tumour!! Here is the post from his CaringBridge journal today.

Quote:
We had wonderful news today!

We got the results back from Will's MRI that he had this morning. His tumor is smaller! Mike and I were expecting the best news would be that it stayed the same, because they warned us that it would be difficult to see if it shrunk. He also has less swelling around it, which is terrific.

That means he goes for round 2 of chemo starting tomorrow.

When we first started this journey, Will had an intial MRI and CT scan to see how big the tumor was, and if it had spread to any other parts of his body. Our neighbor is an oncologist at the same clinic, and he was kind enough to read the results for us as soon as they were in rather than have us wait until the next day's appointment. He told us that there was no sign of the tumor anywhere in his body, and it was all in one place in his sinus cavity. At the time, he said "this is good news". Mike and I were thinking -- "how could this be good news, our child has cancer?" But now we see what he means. By the time you've been referred to an oncologist (from a biopsy), you already have cancer. So to him, it doesn't get better than this -- localized, non-metastasized cancer. Now we feel lucky that we get to do another round of chemo. It's all about perspective. I never though I'd be so happy to be saying my son is getting chemo.

Here is the update following Will's surgery at the beginning of May.

Quote:
Pathology Results In!
The pathology results are in:

No evidence of malignancy in ANY of the samples.

I think this is the best news I have ever gotten in my life.

We feel so fortunate that this is working out as well as it is. Cancer is such a scary world to be a part of. We can't express how relieved we are with these results, but we still know Will has a long journey ahead of him. The results were read to us from the nurse practitioner assigned to our case. Part of us wonders if it's too good to be true, that we'll talk to the surgeon or oncologist and they'll say "wait, we missed something..." I'm sure part of that comes from not believing that we could get such good results.
