I've been teaching K how to knit today (part of her Christmas present was a "Learn to Knit" kit.) She has 4 rows of garter stitch and has a really good tension for a beginner.

Our 5 year old wants to learn to knit too. I taught our 7 year old using a little rhyme.
The bunny hops in the window.
He runs around the house.
He hops out the window.
And slides away!
She kept repeating it under her breath as she knit.

I have been trying to teach my almost 10 year old for a while now. It drives me nuts. I need someone else to teach her.
She can cast on, and she is starting to be able to knit each stitch but it has been a long process.
I will have to teach her that little rhyme. maybe that will help.

She does have a great tension! She may be ready for purling already... 
I can't wait until Roz is older so I can teach her how to knit and crochet...just like my grandma taught me both these crafts.
