I am asking for a friend. Her son just turned 5 and is a super heavy sleeper. He is still wetting a diaper at night. No daytime accidents. She has tried everything! Getting him up in the middle of the night to potty, limiting fluids after dinner, etc. Nothing seems to work and she can't even get him to really wake up enough in the middle to use the bathroom.

She called the Dr. and they told her that is NOT normal and to bring him in. We agree that the Dr. is going to want to medicate and she is definitely against that.

My opinion is that its not that big of a deal and he will eventually outgrow it.

So, anyone have any experience with their child wetting at night until they are older, advice, thoughts??

TIA!

Night training is something that a child has to be ready for. Tyler, who PL'd during the day at 25.5 months definitely was NOT ready to night train at that time. It was another 14 months before HE decided that he was ready.

I've heard several doctors say not to worry about it until the child is over 6 and even then bed wetting may continue to happen - I know my brother was closer to 7 by time he stopped having accidents at night.

I would try a homeopathic remedy before going to see the doctor. Hyland's makes a Bedwetting tablet - http://www.seacoast.com/supplement/hylands-bedwetting-tablets-125-tabs-1939

Shadow has a son that was in diapers at night until he was older then that. Maybe she'll chime in.

DS1 still had night time problems well into 2nd grade. Not every night, but enough that we were worried. He was a really heavy sleeper. He would actually start crying. We'd wake up and know he had to go and go put him on the potty. He never really woke up during the whole thing. Yes, he did eventually outgrow it. Limiting liquids at night helped, but didn't completely get rid of it. He's 10 now and has been fine for awhile now. I'm not sure he even remembers the trouble.

Plus, there was a thread awhile back about this. I think it was Lori (Beneath the Rowan Tree) whose pedi told her that only 20% of kids are night trained by 3 (I think, but might have been 4) and that an additional 20 % become night trained each year after that. I wish I had known that back then. Anyway, that means that it is within reason for a child to still have problem with night dryness until 7 years old.\

I would wait on meds if I was her.

Noooo. Our family practice dr said he doesn't worry one bit about night wetting at this age (DD turned 5 last month). I can't remember what age he said we'd start talking about it, somewhere between 6-8 years old. Our previous pedi said exactly the same thing. Tell your friend not to worry!

THANK YOU ladies! I KNEW that it was too soon to worry. Her son just turned 5 about a month ago too.

She definitely doesn't want to do meds, but the receptionist of all people told her to get him in right away, there was a PROBLEM. Rolling Eyes She was just kind of worrying that something might be wrong.

I'll have her check into the tablets from Hylands, but honestly I think she will probably just wait it out now.

What is your friend's and her DH's history? She might find that the same situation existed for them. I have a friend who two out of her four kids require some kind of nighttime protection and one is 10. Apparently it took her and her DH almost that long and so the doctor doesn't see it as worrisome.

Tallin is 7, he has only been out of diapers at night since the summer. It's perfectly normal, is often a later thing in boys than girls and is apparently down to some hormonal trigger in the brain that will happen in time. Apparently nothing is 'done' here until at least 7yrs.

We tried the Hylands, no success in the past, but they possibly helped a little in the summer, I don't know.

Christian still pees at night and he'll be 7 in Feb. Dr. is not concerned and says for boys it's normal.

Bedwetters run in my family. both of my brothers did till they were WAY older than 5... lets just say baseball sleepovers were a touchy issue.

We when my brother was 11 we had a person come to the house that had a machine that is built into his underwear that would set off an alarm when he had to go to help wake him up. It helped. A Lot.

But it was something they had to outgrow. They just couldn't wake up at night.

I say no worries.

I had one of those alarms when I was little. Most annoying sound ever. lol3

It's totally possible that there IS something off with the kid, like he may need surgery because his plumbing isn't connected right (what happened with me), but more than likely it's just that he's not ready, especially since he's fine during the day.

I know my friend didn't have any late PLing problems, but her dh's sister was like 6 too. Not sure about her dh, will ask.

I really think he JUST turned 5 and isn't there yet. But you know how "people" can make you feel like the worst parent on the face of the planet if your kid doesn't hit their milestone ideals. Rolling Eyes

Thanks again!

not to beat the proverbial horse, but kellen just started being consistently dry in the fall (maybe september? could have been august.). he was 5 in may, and is not 100% dry. i actually put him back into a goodnight because he had a couple of accidents and since he sleeps on a loft bed, biggie preggo mama was not going to climb the ladder and change his sheets twice a week. anyway, it was something he had to come to in his own time, and, for us, is not even an either/or thing. he's mostly dry, but still has accidents.
