I have dealt with this too. But my older mother had taught me to quilt (before I abandoned that to knit), and so I have always been viewed as odd. When I had a quilt on the floor, basting, and I was only 18yo in the service, I got the normal remark from the latest BF; "My grandma quilts". I had been quilting for 5 yrs at that point. I used to do some type of quilting daily and need to get more time to do that. You don't know how much money my DH has invested in my quilting, for me to get the knitting bug and totally go crazy over that. I know I will go back to it.

Our LQS has the same old bitty type thing going on. I have been nice enough NOT to trail in my 8 young children. I have brought 1 in at a time. Although, I can't afford those prices. But, I also used to think that I couldn't afford $18 for ONE skein of yarn. LOL But, I go through the yarn slower than the fabric, so I guess that saves me money. LOL Kymberli

Wow....I guess I'm really lucky here. I mean my LYS sucks and they act like most of what was described earlier.....but not my knitting group. They pride themselves in the diversity of it. They've had a girl as young as 12 (who they taught how to knit) and one of the ladies is over 80. There's atleast 4-6 people my age (I'm 25) that attend frequently. I need to start going again....just have to get moved into the new house first.

LYS is OK here - the woman who owns the shop is there a lot and knows me by name (not saying I go in there a lot or anything...) and one of her daughters (younger than me) is also in there a lot and is a fabulous knitter. They also have a toy corner for kids to sit and play while you look around. They also sell fabric and quilting supplies so it is quite the hang-out.

gee... I don't belong with my own age group, usually. my LYS is great. mostly older women, but they do not look down their noses at anyone, in fact, most of them seem to be less advanced and in awe of my knitting sometimes.

they have a knitting group there, and I go sometimes, and I think I want to go more often now that they have discovered as a group that the internet is a viable place and that ravelry exists, lol. before, if you mentioned ravelry or an internet site they would look at you like you had 3 heads.

I also have another local kniting group... a freind of mine started it, but she moved last year. so now, I run that group... it is small, though... and begining to be more work than it is worth... I may wind up just telling the ladiess there that if they want to knit they shoudl go to the yarn store, and so will I... just for the sake of... well, if I only get 1 or 2 ladies at mine, but the yarn store gets 12, they have more fun...

I get along better with people older than me usually. I get told by the few same age friends/relatives that I have that I am an "old lady" b/c I knit, crochet, sew, and do other crafty stuff. I'm with the person who said they are worried about this being a lost art when our kids are grown, I would be really sad if that were true.

The only local knitting group we have is in the middle of the day on Tuesday's, and even though it says it's kid friendly, I have one of my friends kid's that day, and I don't feel right taking her with me.

My LYS is awesome though! Of course it's a little pricey, and I wish they had a bigger selection of hand dyed yarn, but I love to chat with the little old woman who owns it, and she loves my kids (who are always with me) and her, and her husband if he is there, love to play with them. They say they remind them of their grandkids! They have a couple stuffed sheep they let the kids hold, and then they usually play hide and go seek, or peek a boo with the kids, while I shop! lol! Then I just wear my youngest! I haven't been there in a while though, I really need to go again soon!

I am happy to say my age still gets misjudged a lot Smile People aren't generally rude about it, but I do get people speaking to me in a way the betrays their assumptions. I usually try to casually mention something like... oh my 20 year reunion, 9 years in the Army, etc, LOL! At which point I usually get a "Well HOW OLD ARE YOU??" LOL! We don't have a LYS here, but apparently there is a knitting group that meets at Starbucks - but I can't make it with Emerson etc. My best friend's 19 year old daughter has gone a couple times and said it was only 2 or 3 other people - but she never mentioned their ages. I'll have to ask Smile

what a silly response from somebody whoe wants to run a biz? why not just be friendly and try to sell you something? shrug

The LYS I visit sometimes are pretty nice, I think they're happy to see 'younger' women knitting...I'm 32. The only thing is they sometimes aren't too impressed when I have my 6 yo with me or when the baby is in her stroller and not in my carrier.
