For me personally, I won't eat anything in the grocery store until it's been actually paid for. I'll often give the kids something once we're in the car and on our way home, but never while we're still walking around shopping - it just doesn't feel right to me. Luckily the grocery store that I usually shop at has a free cookie available to children under 12 at the bakery, so if I have Rebecca (6) with me, we'll stop there first so she has something to snack on. _________________ Maureen

Meh.
They can weigh another banana twice.
I don't generally feed the kid while shopping (though she can get a cookie at the bakery) but I have put on new shoes or sunglasses and then had the code scanned because it was easier than the fight.

I think it is the same as stealing as well. Once my son took a few bites out of an apple while we were shopping and the cashier was ticked. I wouldn't feed them anything I hadn't purchased yet, especially not something that needed to be weighed. _________________ ~Kimberly~

I always bring snacks from home when I go grocery shopping. Not only do I feel that it's stealing to eat something that can't be scanned, but produce is kind of dirty until you get it home and wash it. A banana isn't too bad, since it has the skin, but anything where the skin is eaten needs to be washed imo. _________________ Margaret

This. We always bring a snack from home for DS when grocery shopping -- I grab it at the same time I pick up my cloth bags before I leave the house.
We don't open anything at all until we've paid for it, regardless of if it would be possible to pay for it even if it was opened. It's not ours till we pay, IMO. _________________ Rochelle ~ Finn & Cate's Mama

I have in an "emergency" had sliced of cheese weighed out at the deli and then let the kids eat the slices. At the register I've handed the empty bag to the cashier to ring up based on the printed UPC code and price on the empty bag. I don't feel too badly because I know that most of the time the deli counter workers offer each kid a free slice anyway. But a banana is totally different. If I HAD to give them a banana for some reason then I'd pay for the banana before shopping. _________________ Jen

No it wasn't brought from home. She was shopping, took a banana from the shelf and handed it to her daughter. I was so tempted to go up to her and tell her it was she was pretty much stealing but didn't. _________________ Kelly Mom to JM (10-6-02), JR (1-25-05), JT (11-9-06), DR (11-25-09) |

Agreed. Bananas are all pretty much the same size. Why not weigh one twice? No biggie. _________________ Cars From Papa - heirloom-quality wooden toys

Same here-i do try to find 2 (or 4 depending on if i have the 2 LOs with me) bananas that are close to weight, let them eat it and then have the checker weigh the 2 uneaten ones and keep them.
Its not stealing bc i did pay for it. _________________ Knitting mama to 4 busy busy boys and 1 darling girl! |

Not something I would do - but I really don't give a darn what other folks do. I am WAY too busy with my own shopping to even notice what other folks are doing with their kids. _________________ Melinda

I have let my DS pick one fruit and then I would grab a second of the same size/weight. The I would just get the cashier to ring the remaining fruit twice. It's pretty obvious I'm not shoplifting when there is a little one with a giant pear with juice dripping down his chin in my cart. It was the only was I could keep my escapee still and I was not about to give him a treat. _________________ Megan

Me too. I always tell the kids we can't open anything until we've paid for it and left the store. THEN it's ours. _________________ ~ Amy Sue~

If its sold by weight and you eat the whole thing, then I dont see how that is okay.
But I dont care if people open a package before paying for it. Sometimes a child needs something to eat. |
I agree. I have to say that a few years ago I wouldn't have done it, but now I have FOUR kids, and if a fruit snack is all that is between me and a relatively quiet shopping trip, then I give them the fruit snack and scan the code at the till _________________ Ky
