|
|
I just got thinking, wouldn't it be fun to do a one-evening craft swap? See what you can make in a five-hour timespan? (Of course, doesn't have to be five consecutive hours, not everyone even HAS five hours in a row!). I think five hours is sufficient for a nice gift in many different crafts... sewing, knitting, crochet, embroidery, scrapbook/cardmaking, jewelery-making, baking, bath & body, needlefelting, polymer clay arts, quilting, applique ... on & on.
And heading into it, you'd know what kind of time commitment you're looking at ...
Whatcha think? Does it sound appealling? _________________ Mama to:

I like the idea! But, there is a huge difference in what I can get done in 5 hours sewing and 5 hours knitting. How would that work out? _________________ Mimi, mom to Sky (12/24/08) & Olivia (7/3/12)

Yep, I know.
We probably would have a range of time to help make up for that. When it's a time thing, knitting will always come up short for end results - however - a nice capelet that can be knit in five hours versus say a tote bag that's sewn & appliqued ... reasonably equivalent as far as dollar value goes. I wasn't really thinking of trying to match dollar for dollar value - but I think most people have a reasonable idea of what makes a nice gift.
When I was thinking of it (doing the dishes), I went through it in my mind in terms of what I personally could make in five hours. For example - several pieces of jewelery - or - maybe ten to fifteen embellished cards (or more if quite simple cards) - or - a couple of batches of baking - or - a small knitting project like a baby sweater or hat/booties or capelet or maybe wristies - or - a garment - or - simple quilted placemat set - or - kitchen wetbag & unpaper towels - or - a cute crocheted hat or 2 - or - set of napkins with simple hand-embroidery in a corner of each - or - dyeing something (clothing, wool, fabric) - or - a nice bath & body set like bath salts, sugar scrub, a washcloth/ soapsaver, back scrubby thing ...
They all seem roughly equivalent, I think, as far as being a nice stand-alone gift. What do you think? _________________ Mama to:

I can totally see what you mean. I guess it would just need some kind of $ value as a bare minimum so that nobody gets shorted. Just thinking about it I realized I have absolutely no idea how long it takes me to make anything anymore since I rarely get to sew for more than 15 minutes at a time _________________ Mimi, mom to Sky (12/24/08) & Olivia (7/3/12)

Ahhh, the joys of having older kids. When I had a regular craft night (trying hard to re-institute it), I had 7pm to whenever - usually around midnight - all in one stretch. Plus anything else I did through the week. It's sweet to have older kids. _________________ Mama to:

Tee hee. Sorry. Your day will come, too.
Maybe the five-hour craft idea would be more fun in person ... a bunch of women crafting together, trying to start & finish a project ... I dunno. Seemed kinda fun. _________________ Mama to:

I think it would be fun...there's lot's of fun things you can knit or crochet in 5 hours, especially if you use chunky/bulky weight yarn...fingerless mitts, a hat, a cowl, a skinny scarf, a simple baby sweater, slippers...or even worsted weight I could do a hat, baby booties, a couple dish cloths or wash mitts, maybe a cowl, maybe simple fingerless mitts, a set of coasters or coffee cozies, etc. _________________ ~*Kelley*~
