I get an occasional break by running to the store by myself, maybe once a week or every other week. Between dh's work schedule, remodeling, kids activities and day to day responsibilities every moment of the day is crazy. I usually stay up until 1 or 2 am at least 3 nights a week so that I can have quiet.. that's what gets me the most is the sheer noise level in our house. I just need silence for a while, doesn't matter if I knit, browse the computer, read a book.. I just don't want to hear anything. _________________ ~ Bj ~ SAHM to 8 wild and crazy kids

Over the last year I've implemented a mandetory "quite time" for the whole household. I have kids ranging from 12yrs to 20 months and they all have to find a quite place to read or play quietly during the 20 month olds nap time. This gives me a much needed break, and the kids have learned that they had better not bother me during this time. I also go out to dinner at least once a month with friends. My 9 YO DS also has ADHD and some days it's ll I can do to keep my sanity. Breaks are a must for me. _________________ Sandy Homeschooling Mom to 5 great kids

A break, what's that?
Seriously though, last time I went out by myself (actually with dd1 but she was being good) dh texted me like three times. I decided I need a break without my phone so people can't call and text me about my kids, needing me, that's no kind of a break at all.
I feel like I really need mroe breaks than are reasonable to though. I'm really not a big people person at all and I sure don't miss not seeing people, so it's hard being with my kids all day. I'd rather only be around any other people at all for a couple hours a day or something. idk, I guess I just didn't realize how much I liked being able to eat or take a nap ever without something I loved or something expensive getting destroyed or a child getting hurt. _________________ Mother DD '07 and DS '09

I can totally relate to most of this, especially since our kids are about the same age...I have heard that it does get easier to eat and what not when they become a little more independent! _________________ Jessica~WAHM to Julianne 5-19-07, Jocelyn 8-10-08 & our new sweet baby Jacqueline 12-30-10

Well, DH is the SAHD and I try and take care of the kids every night after I make dinner once getting home. I also let him do his own thing either Satuday or Sunday and also take both kids with me on all my weekend errands / shopping to give him a break.
As for me, I don't really get a break and work is extremely busy right now, so it's hard. But at least I can go to the bathroom when I need to and grab something to eat.
We don't really get a break other than that as we have no local family and DS#1 has epilepsy with active seizures and has ADHD and some sensory issues, so it's not like I can get just anyone to watch him. Hugs, it's tough, hang in there! _________________ Judi, WOHM to Joseph (7) and Alex (4)

in terms of getting one...depends on what kind of break you mean. i get a break every night after the kids go to bed. and i NEED it by then. though the baby has been going to bed very late recently, so my break is truncated.
but like a GO AWAY FROM THE HOUSE BY MYSELF break? much less frequently. i do have a girlfriend who has no children that i go out to dinner with about once every few months and that is CRITICAL to my sanity. because we DON'T TALK ABOUT THE KIDS. i mean, i love my mama friends. i do. and i couldn't survive without them. but we often talk about kid-related things. because that's who we are, that's what is near and dear to us. but with my non-mom friend - it's really NOT what we have in common at all (obviously). and let's be real, i mean she appreciates my kids and respects my life as a mom but doesn't REALLY give a crap about all of that mom stuff. LMAO! so we talk about everything BUT that. and drink lots and lots of wine. it's AWESOME. _________________ Michele

I get a snall break in the morning from my twins since they go to preschool from 7:30-11:30. They go to a special needs preschool so it really helps them out. But during those hours I have my 1 yr old daughter but I get most of my stuff done then.
But I get my real break during nap time. All three of my kids take 3-4 hours naps daily. I get all my shop and craft show stuff done during those hours plus start dinner with out the kids running though the kitchen.
I am not sure what I am going to do when my kids no longer take naps. |

i typically need a break of some kind every day so i have enforced a 7pm bedtime for the 2 that i have at home all day and a 8pm bedtime for the 2 that go to school. then i have an hour after that to make sure everyone is asleep and THEN i get an hour to myself to do whatever... alot of times its watching an hour of tv, i'm totally addicted to parenthood and law & order...
during the day i do my sewing, crocheting, and computer time in 5-10 minute stretches alot of times unless i talk the 2 younger ones to watch a cartoon or sit and watch me...
i wish my husband would take on some more time with the kids, he loves spending time with them and everything but he works all day and goes to night school getting his degree and so he's not home on the weekdays very much... we spend all weekend having fun so i always end up with tons of cleaning that needs to be done on mondays, sucks but i know it will get better next year once he has his degree. |

I feel like I need a break more often than most parents and feel guilty about that. Throughout the day I take a couple five minute breaks to decompress. With a five year old, hyper, and talkative girl and a four month old I feel like I'm constantly being drained.
My oldest goes to her grandparents' house on Saturday nights for a sleep over which is much appreciated by me. I feel bad letting her spend the night every week but if she didn't I might lose my mind. |

I haven't read all the responses...but, I NEED A BREAK NOW!!!
I work full time, my husband works frll time and goes to school full time and we don't use day care except on thursday when we both have to be away from the home. We have an almost 6yo and a 1.5yo. We homestead as much as possible too.
I AM EXHAUSTED. Its effecting my work, my parenting and my love life. So monday, for the first time since LAST JUNE we are leaving the kids with the regular thursday sitter and going out. Only for dinner in the small neighboring town, but at least its something.
Whew. I will say, that at night after the boys are in bed, Kenny is still at school or work and I still have a little energy, I clean. By myself. In silence. And it does feel good.... |
