| I just emailed the principle of Piper's school with it. I'm curious to see what she has to say! |

Sad, I can't believe they are feeding this jusk to kids. At least push it on adults that aren't still developing. _________________ Sandy Homeschooling Mom to 5 great kids

That is so disgusting!
Are these subsidized lunches? Is that why you are worried about kids whose parents can't provide a lunch (just cause we always have to provide lunch or else pay the outrageous fee for the caterer that goes to the school). _________________ Margaret

We ONLY have subsidized school lunches in our district.
Piper LOVES the independence of making choices with her lunch. It's a small thing IMO - we review the lunch menu ahead of time and talk about what her choices will be. (OK, not ALL the time do we do this, but she is very well aware of what we expect for her food choices)
But she prefers to buy her lunch because it's pretty much the only source of independence she gets. That and choosing her own book in the library.
But I sent this to her Principal at the school:
Hi Mrs. ****,
I'm Piper **** mother. I was reading the news this morning and found this:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/05/pink-slime-for-school-lun_n_1322325.html
I let Piper buy breakfast and lunch at school. I've never had a problem with the lunches our schools serve at all - please tell me this is not to do with our district. Piper really enjoys the independence of choosing her own meal for lunch so we would like to continue letting her purchase school lunches. But this article is pretty scary!
Thank you!
Carrie *****
I'm anxiously awaiting her response. In the meantime, packed lunches.
But there are quite a few children on the free lunch system at the school - children enrolled in programs like food stamps etc are automatically on the free lunch system as are other income eligable people. Some though, truly CAN'T afford to pack a lunch when free lunch is there waiting and hot.
And SOME just WON'T!!! But I'll leave that soapbox under the table for now LOL |

It's just protein. They render out the protein in the connective tissues seperating it into fat and protein. And all animal tissues are treated with ammonia hydroxide. Thats what makes them stay pink even after being exposed to oxygen. When meat is exposed to the oxygen in the air it turns brown and no one buys it thinking its worse then the pink meat that was gassed.
Pink slime is made 30 miles from me. _________________ Ranae

I've heard of the ammonia treatment before... that's pretty standard anywhere. But my problem is that it's not meat. It's connective tissue.
I have a problem with the ammonia treatment as well, but that's been being done for forever and there's no changing it. It's a mental thing now with us. As against the ammonia treatment as I am, I just don't think I could bring myself to buy brown meat. LOL
But It's not good enough for developing minds and bodies. It's cheap. It's like eating hot dogs everyday. It should not be for everyday consumption.
I'm not entirely a food snob either. We eat McDonalds on special occasions and we have a little carnival stand by our city's Walmart that serves corndogs that will make you think a baby angel kissed your cheek.
But for everyday eating - no way. |
