Does anyone do anything different?

It looks like it's just going to be DS and I for dinner on Christmas. We're having our big dinner tonight and then DH is working through the holidays and won't be home until midnight each night. I'm stumped. We're going to have Chinese food for Christmas Eve. DS's fave and some how leftovers don't seem right for Christmas Day?

Help!

We always do leftovers on Christmas day or sandwiches or soup. I don't think anybody should have to spend all day cooking on Christmas. So I just make sure there are lots of foods that everybody can help themselves to and lots of their favorite snacks, fruits, and drinks.
We do our nice dinner on Christmas eve. That is even simple to prepare. I make a big pasta salad (everybody's favorite) early that morning. Dinner is crab, pasta salad, and then sometimes mashed potatoes. I also usually make some stuffing for my friend who eats with us and really like it.
So we have mashed potatoes and pasta salad for our leftovers the next day, too.

My goal with Christmas food is to make it easy and good. I should be able to enjoy the day, too and not spend the whole time in the kitchen.

If it was just us at home on Christmas, and we werent' heading to MIL's, I'd likely do a crock pot soup or chili, and make sure I had some really great bread/buns from the bakery to go with it.

We're likely having stuffed pasta shells at MIL's, and we'll have the big turkey dinner with my family on the 27th.

Thanks ladies!

I did the smartest mama things I could do. I asked DS. We're going to try and learn to make sushi for Chrismtas Dinner. DS's other favorite food. Yum! I've always wanted to learn but never took the time to.

Oooo, great idea about making sushi! We do steak for Christmas as I am always turkey'ed out. Wink We are having mashed sweet potatoes and bison steak. I am working today (23rd) and Christmas eve and will be tired. I don't want to spend all day trying to make something my girls might or might not like.

Enjoy your sushi fun!

Mmm Bison. Too bad the barbie-Q is tucked away from winter (DH's bright idea I believ in year round grilling) and we're out of propane. I love that idea and may have to do that next year if the sushi isn't a hit. Smile

in germany there are officially 2 xmas days, and 3 meals: the 24th is usually a light meal and depends on the region -- my outlaws do pretzels, potato salad, green salad and wieners (i do pretzels with cheese since i dont eat the other stuff lol ) and afterwards we open gifts.
the 25th is the *1st christmas holiday* and this year my outlaws brought a ham with them and we will do some veggies and stuff with that.
the 26th is the *2nd christmas holiday* and we generally either have vegetarian lasagne or mexican on that day. this year the kids decided on mexican so that is what we will have!

i think i will just stay in bed on the 25th and skip it all lol3

Tonight will probably be Chinese takeout....Tomorrow will be Cinnamon Rolls out of the can (the kids love them and they are easy peasy) for Breakfast and then I'll make Roast Beef sammy's for Lunch and a Potato Soup and we can snack on those most of the day.

Love love love the sushi idea!! It's great that you'll do it together!

I've never been so daring to try making sushi, but DH loves it and I should learn how to make it for him! Let us know how it goes!

We just make our favourites over the holidays, whether or not they fit under the traditional meal ideas or not. It's the only time of the entire year that I head to the grocery store without a list and I just buy and make what I know we really would enjoy eating... healthy or not.

Today it's super beyond high-fat tex-mex and monday we'll have things like bacon wrapped scallops that we don't normally indulge in.

Our neighbor always makes homemade cinnamon rolls for all the neighbors and delivers them on the 24th. She is so sweet that she goes and gets dairy free margarine for ours so that Stiles can eat them, too.
So I should be having homemade cinnamon rolls for breakfast today.
I am working on the pasta salad right now.

I'm drool here. Everything sounds delicious.
I think I might have to pick up Cinnamon buns in a can. I've never made them before but it sounds yummy.
