Before I mess myself and my kids up.
Apparently the exact moment of the winter solstice is at 5:30 am on December 22nd, so that means that the longest night of the year is the night of December 21st and the shortest day is the 22nd, right? And then from then on, the days start getting longer again?

That's right.
We celebrate it on Dec 21st with a feast with many friends. It's one of my favorites of the holiday season. No stress just lots of laughter. We do a pot luck style supper.

Thanks Megan. We celebrate with a yule log for dessert - mmmm! and some special candles we've made. I love how stress-free it is. Sometimes we have people over, sometimes not.
But, the kids are really into astronomy right now too and they think the solstice is ridiculously cool, so I didn't want to mess up and tell them the wrong thing, lol.

I never knew much about the solstice until last year. Last year's solstice, my water broke right after the eclipse. Oops!

Tyler was born 12/22, I woke up around 5am that day in labour. We've never celebrated the Solstice, maybe this year.

I asked my husband, who was an AstroPhysics major, and he looked at me as if I was stupid when he said that was right. lol Guess it's suppose to be more common knowledge that escaped me.
