This is a good pattern, however, we've found that knitted mittens aren't warm enough here in UK even and have been putting these over cheap shop bought gloves, or - the absolute best for warmth - buying upcycled mittens made from felted sweaters. Those are really cosy.

saved that link, thanks....

Do you specifically want knit mittens? I am making some sewn mittens out of some heavy fleece from this pattern -
http://www.thegreenpepper.com/downloads/508web.pdf
Havn't actually made them yet, but here we get a LOT of snow and i find that wool knitted mittens though they are warm, do not stay dry as well and as soon as they get wet & combined with your warm hands we get seriously felted (which in some ways is good but in others is bad when they end up too small).

We love felted wool sweater mittens here. Just use old wool sweaters you have on hand or purchase a few at your local second hand store for really cheap. Here is instructions on how to make them; http://studio5.ksl.com/?sid=4456414&nid=61 .

We live in Eastern Canada and winters get really, really cold here, and these are the only ones we've tried that really keep your hands warm.

OK, those look SO fun. I just culled a fantastic colored turquoise wool sweater from my closet to go to goodwill a couple of days ago but hadn't taken it yet. Now I can see that bad boy wants to be a fabulous pair of mittens instead! Thanks for the inspiration!

We have some knitted mittens that have a single cuff, but the mitten/thumb part is one mitten knit inside another. They are super, super warm.

Picked up a couple sweaters at the thrift store yesterday to add to the one I had and made this today:

Sorry for the yucky pic but it's really hard to take a pic of one's own hand... LOL

Totally easy. Hardest part is finding wool sweaters you want to use. Smile

I meant to say, we bought recycled sweaters mitts and we loved them, when I saw this thread I had to go look for a pattern myself. I cannot pay 20$/pair when I can make them myself, kwim? I was re-reading my post and it sounded like we have been making them, sorry for the confusion. BUT I am totally looking forward to making these and to know they are really easy to make makes it wayyy easier for me to tackle on the project, LOL.

Discovered an added bene for making the recycled felted sweater mitts.

As posted in a nearby thread these:

http://www.purlbee.com/felt-christmas-tree-pins/

can be made out of your felted sweater scraps. I used ribbon at the top for hanging and another folded ribbon at the bottom for the trunk. Way cute.
