If you are in one of the areas that is under mandatory evacuation - please go! Do whatever you have to do and go.
I packed my girls up and evacuated for a Hurricane named Gustav. Piper was 3 and Stella was 2 months old. It never hit us.
3 weeks later - Hurricane Ike was announced and we were not going to leave. It was a pain. And we had JUST unpacked from Gustav. But something in my gut told me to go - Damon too. So a day and a half before it hit, we left. We packed up our stuff, our 2 dogs, our 3 year old and our 3 month old and left.
Hurricane Ike was a nothing storm, but it hit the Gulf of Mexico just right, and our house was flooded with an average of 6 feet of water. Our entire town was drenched with anywhere from 3-6 feet of water. It took a full week to pump the water out of the city.
If we hadn't left, we would have died. The end.
Please take this warning seriously.

I braved Francis and Jeanne...my now 7 year old daughter was 2 days old for Frances. We got the eye of both storms and tons of tornados/massive damage (the roof caved in at my parents' house where we were staying). We evacuated after each one, only because we had no power for at least 3 weeks after each (and they were barely 3.5 weeks apart from each other).
My husband works for Law Enforcement so they go to mandatory 12 hour shifts and are NOT allowed to leave work unless they are sure they can make it back for the next shift.
It stinks...I was very worried when they said Irene was headed for us, and so glad that we didn't get too much bad weather. I have no clue where I would take 3 kids and my big fat pregnant self (all of our other family is on the FL coast too). I guess I will deal with it if we get another storm! _________________ Brittany~nursing student and SAHM to Cole 3/1/03 (autism), Jaden 8/31/04, Cameron 4/8/09, and Skyelar 11/8/11

we left wilson NC & went far inland with the camper, we would not have sustained the winds in the camper. But our home in NY, well the eye passed right over it & I'm not sure it is even still standing. Tons of flooding in our little town, Schoharie Creek & lots thought Gilboa dam would break, it didn't thank God. Prays for the community would be great. All farm land with all crops ready to harvest. All is lost, no lives though, praise God!!! _________________ Melissa~ Wife to King Arthur, Queen of my Home, Knitter, Homeschooler, SAHM, Somewhat WAHM (if you count ebay) and mom to 7 great kiddos!!!

Only casualty we suffered was a loss of power for 30 some hours. But man!! That was a big one! It lasted a full 24 hours from start to finish. Big, but not too powerful, thank goodness. _________________ ~June
