My boys are entering high school this year, I was just curious if anyone else is homeschooling high school.
We're doing a lot of computer classes this year. They're doing Teaching Textbooks for math (one is doing Algebra 2, the other geometry & next year they will switch), Rosetta stone for language (French), on-line classes for world history & literature through Ashworth College high school program. They are also going to do Switched on Schoolhouse's World Geography class. I still need to figure out what the heck to do for science. But right now the only non-computer class they have for school is health/PE!
So - who else is on the home stretch with me? _________________ Melinda

How exciting! Very motivating for me to see someone Home school for the long haul! I am just taking it year by year (and sometimes day by day) as my boys are only in grades 1 and 3.
How about a science class at a community college for your high school kids?

I was just talking about this with my friends today. we are not at high school, but we have a 6th grader that we are getting much more serious with her work load, in preparation for high school. I really do not want to send my kids to high school, so i am starting to research what is available to them.
I am not sure if you are opposed to religion based science, but apologia has pretty awesome science classes for older kids, llike biology, chemistry and others. I think they go into high school. I didnt love the younger kids programs, but i am keeping their info for the older kid stuff. _________________ Melissa Mom with 11 kiddos. 4 who run on Earth, 7 who soar with the angels.

I'm not opposed to religion based science, but I am opposed to young-earth creationism science. Too bad the Lutheran church doesn't put out homeschooling materials Right now our community colleges are not enrolling any students under age 18 due to budget constraints - not sure how that is going to be in the long term - I HAD planned on some cc classes for my kids, but now I don't think so.
I'm not all that thrilled with our local high school. I'd be okay with one of our area charter schools, but it isn't easy to get a space. And my kids enjoy the free time homeschooling affords them.
I tell you, it would be a heck of a lot easier to pick a science if the boys would pick WHICH science class they want to take - if they don't decide soon, I'm gonna pick for them!
Leanne - I remember when mine were all little - it was very exhausting. It DOES get easier when they are older & work more independently. I am much more an educational facilitator now rather than the teacher. Oh and I'm the taxi driver. _________________ Melinda

You might check out American School for science course. They supply the materials and you can pick what kind of science you want. Little pricey for individual classes. My ds is doing one right now and he likes it. He's a freshman and not sure what we're doing this year for everything....new baby has thrown us for a loop! LOL Luckily our state law is hours and not by date. We can easily catch up!!
I'm thinking Teaching Textbooks for Math and they both need to focus on some penmanship this year. They'll also be big into scouts. Older one trying to finish up his Eagle <yay!> and just became a volunteer fire fighter! He got his pager/radio today and everything! He's so excited _________________ Holly

I'm hoping to homeschool mine through high school, but I hesitate to make plans that far in advance because whenever I do, something happens to change it. My oldest is starting 6th this year.
Anyway, I'm actually looking forward to the science portions most and trying to figure out a space in the house to make a lab area. Of course, my undergrad degree is in microbiology (with a minor in chemistry) and my graduate work was in immunology and molecular biology so this is what I love. I can't wait to break out the microscopes, dissecting kits, etc.
Some of the simpler stuff that doesn't require specialized equipment, we even already do and I've started looking for later for how to do stuff at home without dedicated gas lines for bunsen burners (thinking something similar to a gas tank used for bbqs). Storing the chemicals is what I'm trying to figure out most though.
I'm curious about the CC not allowing under 18 to enroll. I was 17 when I graduated high school AND started college. Do they make any exceptions for that?
ETA: I mean to add that simple schooling seems to have quite a few upper level science courses, both interactive and print. I've seen genetics, biochem, chemistry, etc. Some of those don't require real lab work so if those interest your kids, maybe that would work? _________________ Kristina, wife to Ben, homeschooling, SAHM to 5 beautiful kids.

Not anywhere close to high school yet LOL...
but I did dual enrollment when I was in public high school. I went to high school every other day and attended college classes at night It was a great learning experience, and I found myself challenged a lot more than in high school (and I was taking Advanced classes there!). I was able to do this as a junior.
Kristina, I just took Micro 2 years ago. My instructor wasn't actually a teacher, but had worked for the CDC for over 30 years! By far, my fave class!!! _________________ Brittany~nursing student and SAHM to Cole 3/1/03 (autism), Jaden 8/31/04, Cameron 4/8/09, and Skyelar 11/8/11

Holly - I LOVE teaching textbooks. I was a big MathUSee fan, but last year we switched over & I love it. The explanations are great and it is very self-guided. I love that it is non-consumable. It is pricey, but not when I can use it for 4 kids!
Joyce - I'll look into that science, it looks interesting.
Kristina - I do have a simple schooling membership, I haven't looked at the site in awhile, I'll have to check out the high school science classes on there, thanks for the reminders.
I also did dual enrollment in high school through NC state. but over the past few years, they've changed a lot of the rules over the past few years. First they restricted the types of classes you could take and now with the budget cuts, it is getting nearly impossible to do that. The place I would have preferred to take classes has announced that by spring of this year, they will not accept ANY students under age 18 who are still in high school. I think if you have graduated, you can enroll under 18 - but it gets iffy. My county still takes some high school students, but they have almost ended the program. I had really planned on my kids doing dual enrollment & these budget cuts irritate me. _________________ Melinda

I have two older children that I home schooled through high school and are both in college.
I love, love, love Teaching Text Books. I used it with both of them. I also used some Alpha Omega but wasn't impressed. I'd looking into Abeka or Bob Jones. For Science I used Apologia, I did love it but the amount of memorization was a killer.
I'm now starting all over with preschool. |

We're almost there! I have a 12 1/2 y/o, a 5 y/o and a baby. We also use teaching textbooks and that is my saving grace. Trying to teach my oldest math was a constant battle! We also have a microscope and do lots of computer work. We intend to home-school through high school
PS. We use Sonlight and LOVE it! |
