Looks like I have a yeast infection. Do I need to do anything special to kill the yeast on my mam cloth? Tons of vinegar or... ??? _________________ -Sandra

You can also use a touch of oxyclean, or color safe bleach. Some also iron their pads, but be careful about which fabrics your pads are made of, and whether they can be ironed or not. Also, ask the makers of your pads what their suggestions are. They'll know best!
Edited to add: If you're using hand dyed pads, the oxyclean and even color safe bleach, could possibly lighten up your dyed pads. However, if that's not an issue for you, and you just want to be sure to kill the yeast, it may be worth it. _________________ Pietra, wah-wife to one great dh and homeschooling mama to five children who teach their mama about living life every day.

I just washed hot when I had yeast. Hospitals usually wash at 60c and that should be enough to clean out any bacteria.
Oh and be careful what you use to wash them, I'm fairly sure my infection was (in part at least) caused by the soap powder I had switched to. _________________ Shadow

My post partum pads are all Homestead Emporium. Ironing sounds like the easiest option for now since we don't have oxyclean or color safe bleach in the house.
Interesting about the soap Shadow - what were you using? We use Charlies for all of our laundry. _________________ -Sandra

I'm in UK, our detergent is weird here, never heard of Charlies. I was using Ariel bio, had to switch back to Persil non-bio, if that helps I have to make sure I use the right stuff for my underwear too. _________________ Shadow

LOL Ok... forgot that things would probably be totally different.

i say wash on hot w/ vinegar in the rinse and then dry in the dryer on hottest setting, that's what i would do anyway, i don't think you'll harm your pads and you should most certainly kill anything in there.... _________________ Sarah

Thanks. My dryer has a "sanitize" setting so I gave it a try... fingers crossed my pads will all be ok on that heat.
Midwife actually isn't sure it's yeast - itch but no typical discharge. She thinks it may just be irritation. OMG it's driving me nuts though! LOL Trying to go undie free since my PP bleeding is super light now and I'm just sitting on Chux pads. LOL _________________ -Sandra

I've washed with grapefruit seed extract
but Lavender EO is an antifungal if I remember correctly so throwing some of that and some TTO in can't hurt (unless you react to either). _________________ Megan

If it's my pads you're using (Homestead Emporium), then yes, they can be ironed, just not the backs since they are fleece. However, if you have a sanitize setting, I'd go with that BUT, I'd do a second wash through or rinse through with NO soap, at all. You may have a build up of detergent, which can cause irritation. _________________ Pietra, wah-wife to one great dh and homeschooling mama to five children who teach their mama about living life every day.

Do you have any natural yoghurt (live)? I would put that on a pad and place it down there, it will soothe, help if there is yeast, but not harm if there isn't. _________________ Shadow

Grapefruit Seed Extract is fabulous at killing almost everything, but it is SUPER strong and can cause skin irritations (at least it does with us!) _________________ Brittany~nursing student and SAHM to Cole 3/1/03 (autism), Jaden 8/31/04, Cameron 4/8/09, and Skyelar 11/8/11

I would be surprised if it were a build up issue since I'm using my post partum stash, which I haven't used before.
Thanks Shadow - I'd thought of doing something with yogurt like that, but wasn't exactly sure how to execute the idea. LOL Duh, on a pad of course! _________________ -Sandra

This may sound very strange now, but put some plain yoghurt on it. I am certain it would be gone the next day (at least this has always worked for me). It is nice and cooling too no kidding! _________________ Annette with DH Kim, mother and grandmother to 3 each
