UPDATE
I just wanted everyone to know Mason's feeling all better. The swelling and redness went away. Now it's just waiting for the fur to come back to that part of his paw. Thanks again for the suggestions!

I'm not sure what this is. At first, when we noticed it Thursday, DH and I thought it was a scratch. Then I had to be silly and read online and am worried about foxtail. He's not limping, licking, chewing, or showing any other signs of distress, which makes me think infected scratch that we can treat again... It's not hard, so I'm pretty sure that regardless of foreign object or scratch, it's just an infection. Obviously, he needs his nails trimmed, which we have an appt for later today, so I will be asking the vet, but I'd like to hear your opinions too.
Unfortunately, this is the best I can do with a camera phone, but any ideas? Anybody know how expensive it will be if it is a foxtail? Does it look like anything else your dog may have had?

My dog's have gotten those from time to time, especially when we lived in Fl with so many burs and such on the ground. I generally just cleaned the area well with a bedadine scrub. I would sometimes relieve the pressure with a sterile needle, but only after disinfecting the foot well. Then I would
give the foot a soak in epsom salts. My large animal vet told me to handle it that way. _________________ Sandy Homeschooling Mom to 5 great kids

My dog gets sores like that on her feet ... but she has an anxiety issue (or a lot of anxiety issues!) and a compulsive over grooming habit ... we've generally chalked them up to being similar to chapped lips, just from her excessive chewing/licking/grooming. They've never bothered her, never been infected, and the most I've done is rub some vitamin E lotion (from my horse's first aid box) on them. _________________ Rochelle ~ Finn & Cate's Mama

Thanks ladies! The vet said he'd like to see Mason if it gets worse, but since Mason lets me touch it, and it's still a small lump, he doesn't want to do anything drastic right now.
I will be trying the Betadine and epsom salt to see if that helps. He's not an obsessive groomer at all. Pretty sure it was just puppy wanting to play when the cats didn't. _________________ Jessy, Happily Married SAHM to Kaylee (Oct 06,) Alyssa (June 08) and Bubby (Dec 09,) and Tommy (Sept 11)

Glad they looked at it for you.
It totally looked like a hot spot from excessive licking to me too;) _________________ Lori , WOHM to Rowan (08/05), partner to Andy, pack leader to Archie & Hooligan

Hmm... I really can't imagine it being a hot spot since he hardly ever grooms himself, (He's kind of gross that way. Leaves it all up to me,) but I'll try Vit E if this doesn't work after a few days. _________________ Jessy, Happily Married SAHM to Kaylee (Oct 06,) Alyssa (June 08) and Bubby (Dec 09,) and Tommy (Sept 11)
