I am looking for yarn with the bulk of the colorway in natural/neutrals and then some colors that are earthy but neutral....

I am not sure what base to use? maybe a superwash as she is not necessarily a wooly person so it is easy care? Weight?

It is to make a shawl for someone who just became a widow. I want it to be a hug as I know when I was a new widow, I would often imagine my hubby's arms around me for comfort and I want to provide this for her as well. She is heading down a difficult road with three kids that I am very familiar with.

I would like it to be light so it can be used year round and the coloring to allow it to be worn with a number of outfits and to be soothing not loud.

Do you have a pattern in mind? The amount you would need would be dictated by the pattern. You could do something like MM Gather Ye Rosebuds - http://hyenacart.com/MosaicMoon/st/9/46075/-Gather-Ye-Rosebuds-Mtn-Meadow-Rambouillet
It isn't earth/neutral but it is beautiful. I did one for my mom in that colorway and just used black cestari from the cestari store to trim it. The pattern is pretty lacy so it isn't too heavy but is enough to keep her shoulders warm. If you used a lighter yarn, the shawl will be lighter, of course. You could use something like a varigated Yarn love in sport -
http://www.eatsleepknit.com/cshop/product/Yarn-Love-Marianne-Dashwood/907/# It would be a lighter weight but still neutral colors. Madelinetosh has lots of beautiful glazed solids (on Eat.Sleep.Knit as well) and you could do a brown or green.

Just some ideas and what a wonderful thing to do for your friend.

It's called Merced River.

If you want to see it knit up, ask Kristin from Hands and Fire Pottery to show you a pic.

Oh... and I have a ton of undyed sock weight yarn that can be dyed up in this colorway if you want. If you need a different weight yarn, I'd have to order it

She has a beautiful photo of the two of them (her profile pic currently) and he is wearing a coat that is the color of the trim skein, the chestnutty. I am just unsure of it matching up with the colorway and possibly being too heavy of a color for it....but it is one of the inspirations...

Kristina has very graciously agreed to do a custom colorway for me. We are working together to determine colors based on a photo of the couple. I cannot wait to see it!!!
