Is wool allergys common???

I had an old lady tell me that no one ever knits with wool for babys anymore because there is so many that are allergic to wool. I was at her tag sale & she was trying to sell me a cute little knit outfit made from acrylic (which I personnally hate, I like nateral yarn, hehe). Anyways I'm just wondering is it a common thing? Do babys usually have it, adults? Is it a real allergy for all or do some just say that becuase they think wool is scratchy? I'm just trying to figure it out. I like to knit for my family but was thinking of knitting more for my neices & nephews. But what if they have a wool allergy? Can you devlope a wool allergy after you didn't have one to start with?
Any info would be great!!

both of my girls seem fine, they don't have a lot of wool, but they each have hats that are wool. i, on the other hand, turn bright red and itch like crazy the second wool touches my skin Sad

so sad. ariana had an ah may outfit when she was a baby, and just holding her in it made my arm red and bumpy.

I wonder if it's a wool allergy or a lanolin allergy. I know someone allergic to lanolin and if she comes in contact with it, her skin weeps and then peels off and it's really gross, lol.

She made it like alot-most babys were allergic to wool :/ and I thought that the more natural the product the less likely there would be for an allergy to it. I guess its just one of those things, you don't know if you have it or not until you close to it.
I'll have to keep my eyes out for superwash merino. I knit my neice a pair of mittens but she won't wear them until next winter as they are too big right now. Her brother has very sensitive skin so I wonder if that might make her chances higher for an allergy or not?

My MIL and SIL both think they are allergic, but they've never reacted to my kids woolies when they are holding them, so I don't know...I know commercially produced things, they have to avoid (like wool blend sweaters from Old Navy, etc). My DS has gotten itchy little spots from time to time, but I eventually narrowed it down to a certain wool wash scent, and after I got rid of that wool wash and rewashed everything, no more problems.

One of my sons has a very sensitive skin. We have to be careful of soaps, lotions, detergents and clothing. I go with all cotton for him. But I would not call it a wool allergy, just sensitive skin.

I think she's just a crazy old lady...lol!

While yes, some people are allergic to wool, it is not crazy common...I'm sure you'll be fine knitting for them.

When my son was little he was allergic to almost everything, but not wool.
You can be allergic to wool, but it isn't common.

Thank you allfor the great info and responses! I thought she was crazy for saying that as I had never heard of anyone being allergic to wool . Sure I thought there were probably people really allergic to it but then I thought I hadn't even ever heard of anyone IRL so I thought it was more on the rare side. I'm glad I have the proper info now.. Thanks ladies Smile

I thought growing up that I was allergic to wool and never wore it. Turns out that I'm just sensitive to "cheap" wool. If it's scratchy I get a red itchy rash, but I can knit and wear HC wool no problem. Maybe there's something extra in cheaper wool that I'm sensitive to??? I don't know. I too was allergic to LOTS of foods and environmental things. I luckily grew out of most of it though.
