i dont mind picking up fresh stuff during the week -- we dont have the problem of things going bad before we get around to them and we only buy what we are in the mood for. we live in a great neighborhood, though, with lots of fruit & veggie shops and i can pick things up on my way to the shop or home in the evening with my bike.
dh does the weekly shopping with the bike and kiddie trailer |
sounds like a great neighborhood, this is one thing I miss about living 'in town' it's a 20-30min drive to the grocery store with a toddler who really doesn't like the car (who can blame her!) _________________

yup, my partner would LOVE to do the shopping but for various reasons (he comes back with too many extras {aka, he over spends} I insist that I do it. He's gotten much, much better at sticking to a list though so I'd be ok if he was just picking up some fruits & veggies.
I made up a meal plan for two weeks (including some new school lunch ideas for the kids) I made up my grocery list and I realized it's not *that* different I'm just buying more than what I usually would ie: 2 bags of milk instead of 1. _________________

I did it! A two week grocery shop, the total was $160 which I think is pretty good. It's felt so good not to have to run out for something or other. _________________

Way too often... I am trying now to menu plan and that is helping, but with being so close to groceries, it is too easy to just go when you run low on one item. I think if I went less, we would spend less... _________________ Kristin, SAHM to an amazing four year old, and a giggling 9 month old |

If you're buying fresh, more often is generally better.
I have been lazy and I shop 2-3 times a week because that's the least I can do if I want fresh veggies and fresh meat. _________________ Lianne

groceries are a lot more expensive in Canada! We also don't have stores (at least in my city) that double coupons or give coupons on the back of receipts.
I spend at least $125 a week (often much more than that) but we do buy store brands often because they are usually gluten free and that adds up too. We eat a lot of fresh fruit which costs an arm and leg and meat is crazy expensive too.
I am really trying to go to the store less because it really does keep spending down but it's hard sometimes! _________________ Crystal WAHM to Emma & Liam, loving wife to Scott.

I was just reading today that the average family goes 5 times a month and throws away 14% of the food.
The magazine suggested going 1 time a month and it would limit the impulse shopping. Also, that couponing can cause you to spend more because you are sucked into the deals that you dont need because its on sale. That item might get shoved into the pantry or its a packaged item that could be made fresh. _________________ Erin

4-5 times a week It depends on what I want to make for dinner that day. I can plan, but plans usually fall through. And fresh veggies don't tend to stay fresh more than a couple of days for some reason. _________________ ~June

I spend usually 85-100 a week, however, my goal this year is to start going only every two weeks. I have tried to stock up but guess I need to double up on that to achieve my goal. _________________ WAHM of Belly Belly Buttons http://www.hyenacart.com/bellybellybuttons

I go to Costco once or twice a month and do the bulk of my shopping there. We do lots of frozen veggies! Then I usually go to the store 2 other times a month for a few fill in items, but those are quick stop ins. _________________ Ali, mama to my amazing Arabella 1/14/06

you can do two weeks
if you eat the fresh that's more perishable first and leave things like acorn squash, carrots, celery, lettuce, potatoes, kale- study greens etc later.
i wrap my herbs in a paper towel and they last long
I go one a week. I used to go every other week and we do eat lots of fresh foods _________________
