If you can get your hands on a copy of Interweave Knits Summer 2007, they have a wonderful article entitled "A Better Sock from the Toe Up" (aka Working Socks from the Toes Up). It has step by step instructions with charts for how many stitches at x step for sizes itty bitty to L adult socks with gauges ranging from 4 stitches/inch to 8 or 9 stitches per inch. It's a truly awesome pattern!

I HATE charts and I never work off them. I'm a bad knitter. Smile

It depends on what your gauge is. Do you usually knit tight and/or have to switch needle sizes and do a few gauge swatches, or are you usually knitting what the pattern gives as the stitch count and needle size?

I knit TIGHT. Duckies are written for size 3 DPNs, I believe, but I use size 6, otherwise I can't get gauge.

ETA - Duckies are super simple. Knit, purl, decrease (I think it's K2tog and skp), the heel, picking up stitches, yarnovers, and Kitchener stitch at the end. That's IT. Super simple.

Wow, Elly, that is some really tight knitting!! I hate charts, too.

Duckies is definitely an easy pattern. It's written for sport weight on size 3's, though I have used DK for it before as well. Is your sock yarn fingering or sport? If you have the yardage on it, that would help as well.

Generally speaking, you want to knit your socks with more stitches per inch than less-- knitting fingering on 1's or 2's will give you a longer wearing/better constructed sock than knitting it on 3's.

Not charts like in lace, charts like this. At each stage it tells you how many stitches when you stop increasing for the toe, how long to work the foot, how many when you start the heel, how many when you knit the ankles, how long to knit the calf part, etc.

(The numbers in there are just made up... I can't remember the breakdown for her cast on other than that one size has 8 stitches cast on for starters).

A library could have it. I bought it at my LYS on sale when I got it. This is really the most simple, straightforward sock that I've ever knit. In fact, I've knit it 4 or 5 times because it's like the author is sitting there holding your hand every step of the way.

Here's a pattern for a basic sock that I found on Ravelry: http://www.knittingonthenet.com/patterns/socksbasic.htm

Here's another one that may work for you: http://www.islandofmisfitpatterns.com/2006/09/22/universal-sock-pattern/

Wish we lived closer...I would have been happy to be your sock-knitting coach. Smile

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/duckies

Socks aren't hard to knit; they're just more time-consuming at first.

Here's another good pattern for worsted weight in kids' sizes though they use size 5 DPNs: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/encore-worsted-kids-socks They go much faster than adult socks on smaller yarn and would be excellent for learning top down sock construction.

Also, if you're doing top/cuff down socks, I'd recommend the German twisted cast on. It's stretchy, but still looks really good.
