I don't want to discuss this in depth here, but how likely is it that an embryo would be missed at a 6-8 week sonogram? I have the picture that they gave me last summer, which clearly shows 1. But what I remember seeing--and I was alone at the time--was two things that looked a lot alike. I figured one was the placenta, but now I'm doubting that the placenta looked so much like the fetus. It was really similar insize--Is it possible that it was twins? Maybe it was the yolk sac? It just occurred to me that I didn't quite understand what I was seeing.

I found out at 7 weeks that I was having twins and it was very clear what they were. She had to look to make sure that there was a baby in each sack but the sacks were side by side. I have a picture if you'd like me to post it or PM it to you. I'm heading out now but I can send it later.

Thanks. I have looked at pictures online and seen what twins in utero look like. I'm just trying to figure out what the second part I saw was--I guess it could have been the yolk sac but I guess I'm wondering now if it was a less developed baby.

It seems like they would have told you if there were two embryos at the time of the u/s?

That's what I was wondering. The baby had stopped developing sometime in the 6th week, though I was 9 by the time the miscarriage occurred. If there was a second baby it would have been identical, I assume, because everything came out in one tidy sac.

I've been researching online, and I just can't reconcile what I saw that day with the picture I was given from my ultrasound. I guess I'm going to try to just let the question go.

Okay. I just thought I'd offer. It is very possible for there to be a second sack though, that never contained a baby. I hope you find some peace. Hug

Could have been a cyst- I have had one with each one of my pregnancies, and they have been about the same size as the fetus. With my first it was a very large cyst and I had to be rescanned a couple times to keep an eye on it. With the other two it was no big deal and they didn't really say much until I asked if there was a cyst there. Maybe that is what it was? I think they would say something if there were two babies. Hope you find the what you are looking for.

Was the us vag or abd? I ask because there is quite a difference in clarity at that stage. My abd us looked kind of like two babies (or one big as they slightly overlapped), but the tech pointed out one as the baby and one as the yolk sac. The vag us I had with other kids at the same stage was much more clear.

Thanks so much, mamas. Ultrasound was abd. I don't see anything but the one embryo on the picture they gave me, and the tech. didn't say she saw anything else. The part of the tissue I am wondering about was the same color and texture--I don't know if that's the right word--as the teeny babe. I didn't look closely enough at it--I just confirmed that I was seeing that I was indeed seeing an embryo. I'd like to think the tissue in question was a cyst--my doc wouldn't necessarily have told me if they'd seen that; it was more about giving me a gentle hope while seeing me through what might and did happen. Rationally I don't know why this would make such a difference either way. Feelings aren't rational though.

I would put a call into your Dr and ask them exactly what is on your mind. Its the only way your going to know for sure. Hugs Joni, sorry you are feeling so much doubt right now. I can understand ((HUGS))
