I went to the commissary this morning and there's a lady who gave her daughter a banana to eat while they are shopping. Is this something you find acceptable?
I find this to be totally wrong and in my eyes stealing. It's not like a candy bar where you can scan the barcode but even that is something I wouldn't allow my children to do. _________________ Kelly Mom to JM (10-6-02), JR (1-25-05), JT (11-9-06), DR (11-25-09) |

I agree that it is stealing but I have had a few times when one of my kids was screaming or such and I would pop them a few grapes Never a whole banana or anything but once or twice Roo has eaten a few grapes. _________________ Angel |

If its something that can be scanned or is sold based on the item, then I dont care.
If its sold by weight and you eat the whole thing, then I dont see how that is okay.
But I dont care if people open a package before paying for it. Sometimes a child needs something to eat. _________________ Erin

I don't think it's okay if it is something sold by weight. I tend to open cereal bars or granola bars for the twins though. _________________ Amanda, wife of 1, mom of 5

Technically (here at least), it's not stealing unless you leave the store without paying for it. I don't see a big problem as long as it can be, and is, paid for, as mentioned above. _________________ Shadow

I agree. If it's something sold by weight then no. I don't mind (and have done it myself) if it's something that is either sold by the item or has a barcode that can be scanned.
I have to say though, that I still try not to do it because I'm paranoid that I will forget when it comes to check-out time. _________________ Kristina, wife to Ben, homeschooling, SAHM to 5 beautiful kids.

i did that once. so i picked up an extra loose banana, paid for that, and then put it back. so i paid for mine, essentially. _________________ Michele

That is why I shop at PCC, they give all kids under a 12 a free piece of fruit. _________________ Becky's Paper Creations hc

there are still a lot of shops here where you weigh and barcode your own fruit, so it would be easy to weigh a bunch of bananas and then take one off for the kidlet. if this kind of system is not used, though, then i think it is totally uncool. _________________ my name is bond, my name is bond. james bond, james bond

I just saw a woman do this yesterday at wholefoods. She took a handful of some chocolate covered nuts and started eating them and offering them to her friend whom she was shopping with. Almost every time I go there I need to give my son something but it's always scannable like some fruit salad in a cup with a barcode or some cookies from a box. _________________ Janet aka Ama

I totally understand a kid needing something to eat when grocery shopping, and I would rather see a mom open something with a barcode than something that needs to be weighed. Or ask for free a cookie at the deli/bakery, something they give out to kids. Granted it's not healthy. _________________ Kelly Mom to JM (10-6-02), JR (1-25-05), JT (11-9-06), DR (11-25-09) |

Yes, I agree, it's stealing.
That's why we bring food from home like granola bars or something like that...keeps the kids occupied and happy _________________ http://www.facebook.com/bluebirdbathcompany |

I agree with everyone...as long as it is something where you can still provide the bar code for payment, then fine, but if it's something to be paid for by weight, it's stealing.
I used to go to the grocery store right after the gym and was often hungry, so I'd eat an energy-type bar, always being careful not to rip the bar code so it could still be scanned. I also opened a box of crackers for Roz once so she could have one while we shopped. I've even opened a gal of milk and poured some in her sippy before placing it in my shopping cart! LOL!
If we had the system that Michi mentioned, it would be so easy to bag up and bar code our per-pound purchases and then have some if we want to eat while shopping, since we already had the price calculated. _________________ ~Mary, Mom to N, grandma to R (10/08), E (4/11)

I often give my kids a little box of the animal crackers (my mom used to do that for me, too) but never ever anything that has to be weighed. That is stealing. _________________ MaryAnn ~ wife to Joe and mom to Joey (10-21-04) and Kate (10-11-08)

I have opened things with barcodes nothing ever to be weighed... maybe she bought it from home? I have no clue. _________________
