DH and I are right in the middle of replacing our front deck, he and I cannot agree where to put the stairs and the new slate sidewalk blocks leading up to the steps. I think the stairs should be centered off the door, he thinks they should be centered off the deck.
The old deck and stairs:
The new deck. The right side of our house is 6 inches in from the property line so if we do the stairs centered off the door with the sidewalk blocks coming straight from there half the yard is going to be big the other half will be teeny. Along the left side of our house we'll be putting in a new driveway:

Centered on the door.
Or if you don't want the yard broken up another option is to have the stairs on the side of the deck, coming up from the driveway. This is how our house is. _________________ Cindy (layout engineer), Brian (SAHD)

Centered off the door. That way you walk straight to the door. _________________ Erica

Thanks for your opinions ladies! There will be a small stairway coming off the side of the deck by the driveway as well but since the driveway will be gravel and we get lots of snow and ice I don't want people to have to walk on it. _________________ Genevieve (no, not the talented one), married to Shane, mama to Miss Mouse and Little G! |

I'd say centered off the door too. Your driveway will be taking up some of your yard anyway, and you can always use artistic gardening to make things look more even. _________________ Margaret
