|
|
Well, we met with Dr W again today. It's been three months since we saw him and in that time, we've finished up the testing for any and every metabolic disorder. It's safe to say we've come to the end of that road. When I went in today, I wasn't expecting much to happen. Maybe just catching up. But nope...I was greeted with a diagnosis. He said that since Evan does exhibit signs of Autuism but he does things that don't fit classic Autism or Aspergers, he is being diagnosed with PDD (Pervasive Developmental Disorder) aka Autism Spectrum Disorder.
As soon as he said those words, I felt oddly at peace. I think he expected me to freak or at least react and I might have confused him with how I did react. When we came in a year ago, we were so sure we would get an answer and autism was a scary thought to us. As you all know, we've been put through the ringer more then once. I was at the point where I had gone through every stage of grief at least 5 times over and I had accepted that we were never going to find an answer. So when he said it while we all sat on the floor, it was like this huge weight lifted up off of my shoulders. Because now, it's just moving forward.
We go back in two weeks or so for a follow up appointment. He wanted me to take a week to read all the info he gave me and let me think it all over in my head so I can come back with all my questions then. After that, we will take over the medical report to the school to get all the therapies and every he needs started straight away. He said the only thing we won't be able to get on base is ABA therapy but he wants to see how Evan handles everything we are planning already before we think about trying to get that.
All in all, I'm happy we can start to get him all the help he needs. For months now, we've just been treading water and it's finally nice to actually start moving again. This diagnosis will help him get so much help now. It's pretty hard to get Tricare to approve something just because he has "issues". It will also help things on base...for example, Evan needs to see a dentist bad but will need to be sedated just to even look at this teeth. Dr W said that they are more then happy to do that for kids like Evan. And he gave me hope as well...some kids may need lifetime help but some, some turn out to be "normal" kids that just have a few quirks.
I'll keep everyone updated as this goes along. Thank you so much to all of you for all the prayers and thoughts sent our way since this all started. _________________ Ashley Mama to Evan and Kellen and Wife to Rick

Big hugs Ashley. My nephew is an aspie kid and I know many, many others who have pdd. If you ever want to vent or need a shoulder I'm here. You are right though, it must feel good to be moving again and not just in limbo. _________________ Kristi, happy WAHM to dd (8), ds (5), and ds (3).

I'm glad you finally have an answer. I agree, a diagnosis beats dealing with the unknown. At least you know that it has a name. I hope all the pieces fall into place quickly to get him the help he needs. _________________ Priscilla, wife to Daniel 1/15/2005
