okay, this is a story of the Ongoing painting. I started this painting almost seven years ago (yes you read right, i said 7). Dh wanted a "tribute to the 70's music". He told me sort of what he wanted. A friend had given us the huge framed board, it was painted over...for various reasons (moved twice, had another kid, had it smudged, had wall paint spilled on it, had a small hole put through it, repainted parts of it several times...I just haven't gotten it finished. But i work on it occasionally. It so far has representation of Allman Bros., led zepplin,Beatles, grateful dead,pink floyd, jimi hendrix, & rolling stones..eventually to include janice joplin & the doors.Here's a not great pic,it's darker in there & the flash is too much,lol...

When I was first learning to crochet, I made a granny square blanket. One gigantic granny square of Red Heart Acrylic. For the first 40 or 50 rounds, I joined it correctly at the end of each round. BUT after that I FUBAR'd my join... and what should have been a square blanket is some kind of mangled free form squarish thing. The blanket is 9 years old... and my four year old is obsessed with it and wants to be rolled into a burrito each night in it. I seriously twitch each time I see it because I see my huge ol' mistake.

Not sure if this one counts.

But this summer I decided I needed to get the soon-to-be-born baby's newborn diaper stash made. I got 15 diapers made and breathed a sigh of relief that I at least had a good start of newborn diapers for her.

Fast forward to the day we're coming home from the hospital. Put one of these diapers on and everything seems great. But you know newborns don't pee a whole lot in the first day or two. Anyway, it worked great because she hadn't peed.

Next day, every time I put a diaper on her it leaks. I figure I haven't made the inserts absorbent enough. Turns out what I thought was microfleece wasn't and isn't letting much go through.

So several hours of cutting/sewing/etc and yards of expensive fabric down the tubes. I still cry about it.

This one cracks me up because I have a crocheted blanket story like that too. I crocheted a ripple blanket like that for my parents for Christmas one year. I think I was about 12 or something like that. I was so proud of myself that I never even noticed it was so crooked. My Dad ended up using it in his car on the back seat as a cover up thing. I was helping him clean his car one day when I was about 16 and almost died when I saw how horrible that thing was. My Dad's cars were his major love so I couldn't believe he put that thing in there. He told me that you couldn't tell the different when it was folded in half and placed on the seat and that he loved it because I made it. After he died a few years ago, my brother inherited his classic car with that ugly blanket in it. I told him to take it out of there. He told me he couldn't because Dad told him he always wanted it in there.

i have this yarn that has been sitting in my stash for over a year. really cool handspun (overspun) australian yarn -- i have NO idea what the fiber is, but it has tufts of something very human-hairish i got it from an aussie friend who got it from the spinner friend. the cool part about it is that it was dyed with eucalyptus and smells really good. anyway, have been wanting to *do* something with it for a while and decided to knit another vest because those are the things my boys love to wear most. got the waist ribbing done with the darker yarn (which is sheep wool) and it looked fine. started in with the mystery yarn and was already thinking: hmmm, this is going to be eccentric put it aside to do other projects, picked it up again, and it just kept looking wonky. by this time i was determined to just plow through it because i have no idea what else to do with this bizarre yarn i finished it today and errr, definitely a bit different, but you know how evil i am? i am still going to put it into lodei's drawer and DARE him to wear it (picture pre-wash and blocking; 2nd picture is of one of the mystery tufts )



and the piece that didnt want to be, but did: my bat shawl. i must have taken more rows out than i put in. it took me FIVE cast-ons to get the first pattern repeat done (one bat). then i learned about life-lines and did okay, only using it twice for the rest of the shawl. i got almost halfway through the border (16 rows of over 320 stitches / row on fingering) and had to rip it out. this was the point where i threw it against the wall finally got it done and i wear it almost every single day. it is one of my most treasured yarns (wollmeise) and my first shawl ever...

I don't have major ones but have definately made my fair share of mess ups. My most "duh" moment was when I was rushing through a set of pads and got right up to the final top stitching before realizing that I hadn't put an inner core in them (the very first step). I just sewed the top to the bottom so there was no going back unless I wanted to stitch rip.

I also tried my hand at making ds some fleece diaper covers and ofcourse was so excited making my first one that I had the stretch going the wrong way and there was absolutely no way he could get them on. Duh!

Felted slippers. Dastardly felted slippers.

I misunderstood what the pattern was telling me, and ended up with 2 extra stitches every row. Every frickin row. They were huge, yes, but I was anticipating huge.

I felted them. Way too big. Again. Still way too big. I felted these suckers like five times. They're thick, warm, and - um - big enough to fit over a cast (know anyone with two broken legs?

The bugger is that it's not like they'll fit someone with bigger feet. The soles are good for my feet - the entire top portion is way too big.

I keep meaning to cut it down, treat it as fabric - re-sew onto the sole ... cuz these would be SO warm. But I'm so ticked off every time I lay eyes on them, I can't stand to do it.

OK, y'all have some seriously funny/sad/terrible/hilarious stories.

I taught myself to knit when I was a young mother. The very first thing I tried was a soaker (using some free pattern from the internet at the time). Yes, in retrospect I think starting with a scarf might be the better idea... But anyway, this thing was a nightmare. I had to go back and fix the gauge, the cast-on (which was too tight but I didn't realize until the waistband was done), etc, etc. Finally, I get finished with the knitting and the pattern said to 'graft' the front stitches to the back. I had no idea what that meant and was too frustrated at that point to look it up. So, I just kinda zig-zagged stitched it together. It looked ridiculous. Thankfully, I didn't have a baby small enough to wear it at that time. And by the time I did have a baby the right size, I'd learned the see the humor in it all. ;-P

My craftastrophe started when I was on bedrest with my first. It was day 2ish and I was bored out of my mind, so I decided to give 'Knifty Knitting' a try. I figured out bitty little hats and booties without too much trouble, so I decided to try to move on to a scarf. I worked on this stupid thing for a good few days, and it actually looked pretty nice (considering it came from a freaking Knifty Knitter). I get 'done' and try to finish it off. I could not for the life of me figure out how to do it without it unravelling. I tried, and tried and tried and it just wouldn't work. I got so angry that I just said 'screw it' and 'lovingly tossed' the 'scarf' aside. Smarty pants that I am forgot that the Knifty Knitter was still attached to it. I 'tossed' it right onto my dresser--where my huge mirror was. It hit so hard that I cracked the freaking mirror.

So in an attempt to make a scarf with some crappy JoAnn yarn, I ended up costing us about $250 to replace the mirror. Niice.

My sad crafting experiences start when I walk out the store door and into my house. I have 2 sewing machines, an embroidering machine, a cricut, a laminator, supplies to make my own soap( which I did make and was good at it).. a sticker/magnet maker and about 3K in supplies for all this, if not more. Everything sits on shelves. Im horrible at anything that takes time to do. I cant sew to save my life, I can do the cricut but wow, what a mess with all the kids to use one of those!.. and the embroidering machine and sewing machines have been on a shelf in the basement collecting dust for more than 5 years.
I did make Soap tho.. and I was really good at it. I had a 75% lanolin based wool wash. It took almost nothing to wash and it worked great. I had a stack of wool wash bars on the shelves curing and one of the kids nocked over the shelf and I lost all the bars. That was the last set I attempted to make of cold process. We moved and it all went into boxes in the basement. Someday I might take it out again.. Its just a lot of unfinished projects and no time to do them all in.
Yesterday my mother and I attempted to convert a onsie into a tshirt. Sounds simple? Cut, Iron, Hem.. except it wouldn't fit a newborn in length and it started off as a 6 mother. I have learned that I just need to pay all of you to make all my stuff and it turns out much cheaper for me in the long run, and I get a product I can use. LOL

In 2007 when I learned to knit, I enthusiastically started knitting myself a Central Park Hoodies, in some nice Baltic Blue Peace Fleece. After about 5" (knitting the back and sides together as one piece), I needed the needles for another project (because I have knitting ADD ) and set the project aside. By the time I picked it up again, I couldn't remember what changes I had made to the pattern or what size I was knitting.
CPH: 1, Me: 0

Fall 2008 - Hmmm, getting cold, time to start my CPH again! Measured myself, started knitting and this time wrote down what size I was knitting. Slowly worked on it throughout the winter, then in Jan/Feb I lost the pattern. Oh hey, they have it online now - buy a digital copy and keep knitting. But I didn't look at it too closely and just followed the same "size" by the numbers two in from the closing parenthesis, without noticing that the digital copy had extended sizes. So, halfway up the back I started knitting a new, larger size. Doh.
CPH: 2, Me: 0

Spring 2008 - Rip it back to where I had mucked up the sizing and keep knitting up the back. It looks good, I'm happy with it, yay, might even get to wear it in the fall! Get the back almost finished and hold it up - crap, it's way too big! I lost 60 lbs since I started knitting the darn thing, and now need a different size.
CPH: 3, Me: 0 (well, maybe 1 for losing the weight!)

And all that Peace Fleece is still sitting in my yarn stash, making me feel guilty every time I start a new project.
