For Emily... who wore cloth even in the hospital.... I used fitteds with no cover. Then, for night, I put a fleece cover on her, just to be safe, but still changed her all night to keep her dry. I tended to prefer organic cotton next to her skin.
I did have some prefolds, but didn't like using them much because I didn't want to use a snappi on a newborn, and I didn't want to use pins on a newborn. Go figure. I didn't want to use a cover.... so prefolds were out. What I *did* do, however, was let her spend a lot of time naked in the sling with a prefold or two underneath her, and a little wool pad I made to sit underneath the prefold.
Needless to say, the only rash she got on her bum was from a pampers that I put on her ONCE, and she didn't even pee in it. The rash was so bad, it eventually required a prescription to clear it up.... it was eczema.
I was told that I might have better luck with cloth. lol Well, yeah... I did. I just put a sposie on her once because we were away from home and I forgot to bring a diaper, and hubby was late picking me up.
Anyway... that's what worked for me.

Teri, that sounds like a wonderful way to do it.
To the original poster, if your scared of prefolds b/c of the pins/snappis, you can just trifold the pf and lay it in the cover.
Looking back on it, I eventually started using fuzzi bunz at night and the fleece lining seemed to help him rest longer. I wasn't pleased with pockets or bummis at night b/c he slept on his side to nurse and we had tons of leaks. SO, I will add to my first post the suggestion of something w/ stay-dry liners for nighttime and a cover (wool/PUL/fleece) that pulls on. _________________ Tricia

I use fitteds and wool 99% of the time. I do have a few aios and a few pocket diapers, but I use those at night. If I am holding Finn or nursing him, he *has* to have on a fitted or else pee runs out the side. It doesn't matter how snug fitting the cover is, it just happens this way. Fitteds also keep poop in better IMO. _________________ Terri, mama to 4 beautiful girls and a boy

I voted other... because I couldn't choose two options. But, since I make most all of my own... it's a little unfair. 8)
I used mostly fitteds with covers (mostly wool) for at home and at night. I use AI2s for traveling or going out for long periods.
I love my AI2s for Eliana... but, I so much prefer the fitted and wool covers for Tabitha. I never thought I'd see the day that I couldn't wait for Eliana to PL... but, I'm there. _________________ Godspeed... ~ Tiffani
