Information on wool types:

The Merino wool is an interlock knit, as is the wool/Lycra blend. There are different thicknesses depending on the yarn in which it was milled.

Merino refers to the type of sheep in which the fleece was taken. There are several types of Merino too. Merino wool has a very fine fiber with tightly spaced scales (the outer layer which sheds water, the inner core of wool fiber has chambers like a sponge almost, which is how wool can be absorbent & shed water at the same time.

Merino wool is dense and compact which makes it one of the softest, comparable to cashmere.

The Interlock/Jersey difference is how the fabric is made. For instance, the jersey is woven on a machine with a single bed of needles, while the doubleknit or interlock is made with a double set of needles. Here's the difference between the two described in Threads magazine.

"Single-knit fabrics like jersey, velour, terry, and fleece look different on the reverse side, have cut edges that curl, and usually have about 25-percent stretch. Double knits like interlock (made with fine yarns) tend to be more stable than single knits, often look the same on both sides, have cut edges that don't curl, and stretch from 25 to 75 percent, depending on the fiber and construction."

Some customers think "thicker" is better in wools, but if you don't start with a quality fiber, even the thickest wool won't work well. Thicker can be warmer, but then might be too heavy for Spring and Summer time. I hope this helps when choosing your wool for diaper covers. In this economy, we all want our woolies to last for more than one season.

A word on sizing for footies.

These are stretch fabric, and will give quite a lot. The inseam measurements are to the heel and the largest measurement is taken while stretching the fabric slightly.

Comfort is my goal as most of my customers us the footies for bedtime. The doubler makes them ideal for overnights or heavy wetters. Please email me if you have any questions on sizing or fit.

**A word on red dye in wool: Red dye in wool can be destabilized by certain scented wool wash or by Eucalan, or Woolite, as well as by heavy soaking urine left unchanged. If the red dye bleeds onto a diaper it generally washes out in a normal diaper washing. I generally have a natural colored doubler inside any red wool for extra protection.

My red colored wool is stable upon leaving my home, but I cannot be responsible for differences in water PH, or water temperature causing a red wool to bleed.

As with all cloth diapers, frequent changes keep your baby’s skin healthy and preserve the vibrant colors of your wool.
