I really pour my heart into every item that I sew and I really want that item to be exactly what you are expecting. The following sewing, custom, and dyeing information will help to clarify details to make sure that we are both happy with the outcome of your order.
Some woven or knit items might require basting stitches in order to create gathers in the fabric. These basting stitches are sewn in and then picked out when the item is completed. The stitches can cause tiny "holes" in the fabric which disappear after washing. The "holes" are merely the material of the fabric shifting to the side to accomodate the basting stitches. After washing the material shifts back and the "holes" are no longer there. If you receive an item and you notice this, do not fear! Wash the item following the washing instructions and there should not be a problem. If you have any questions about this I would love to answer them:)
While tracing and preparing the fabric for sewing I use purple and blue fabric markers. These disappear over time or wash out. If you see these on your item please wash the item following the washing instructions and they will disappear. If you have any questions about this I would love to answer them:)
Over time I have developed slightly different techniques for creating the cute clothing in my gallery. For example, in the past I used wool blend to create the ruffle on my ruffle soakers and now I use wool jersey. By default, I will automatically use the current technique unless you specify that you would like something different. When in doubt, ask me, I want to make sure I make you exactly what you want:) I'm currently switching from wool
blend that is 97% wool /3% lycra to wool blend that is 95% wool /5%
lycra. Both are lovely and thick and the switch does not affect the
quality of my wool as a cover. However, as I work through what I have
dyed, any item maybe have either (or both) types of blend. If you would
like to know which blend is on a particular item send me an email and
I'd be happy to tell you:)
Customs:
When ordering a custom there are a lot details to be worked out. Such as sizing, colors, fabric choices, etc. I want to make sure that I make exactly what you want so please be as clear as you can when describing all details. Due to the nature of email, misunderstandings can sometimes occur, if you are unsure of something do not hesitate to double check with me. I want you to be happy with your order.
I know it it sometimes hard to decide exactly what you would like to order and I absolutely don't mind if you change your mind about particular details, however, if the item is already sewn I will be unable to change what we have already decided on. After all details have been worked out and the invoice has been sent, payment is expected as soon as possible. I understand that customs can
get pricey and I want to make them as affordable as possible; payment plans are available at anytime, however, please do not ask for a custom that you cannot pay for. If the invoice has not been paid after one months time a reminder will be sent out and then the invoice will be canceled. If you wish to reinstate the invoice at any time please email me and we can work something out.
Fabric Dyeing:
All items are hand dyed by Rebecca Hiebert either in a pot over the stove or in a top loading washing machine. Great care is taken to insure that dye jobs are as consistent as possible but some variations might occur, shades might vary between dye lots. Wool fabrics are dyed using acid dyes and bamboo fabrics are dyed using procion dyes. Both are color safe but care should be taken to wash the dyed items with like colors.
Washing:
Non-wool items: Wash items on warm with very little
detergent and dry for 60 minutes on hot. Although materials have been
pre-washed, maximum absorbency may be reached after a few washings. Do
not use fabric softener or dryer sheets.
After an item has been used, place it in a diaper pail with a loose
lid. Items that have been peed on can be washed on warm with very
little detergent (1/4 to ½ the amount suggested on the container), with
an extra rinse to remove any extra detergent and dried on hot for at
least 60 minutes to sanitize. Items that have been soiled can be soaked
in the toilet and then shaken to remove anything left hanging on. Use
an extra cold-water rinse with up to a ½ cup of vinegar to help with
staining before doing a warm-water wash, with very little detergent and
at least 60 minutes of drying on hot to sanitize. Other clothes can be
added to the wash if the items have been peed on or if the cold-water
rinse has already taken place. If you find your bamboo velour items to become stiff and no longer soft, this is due to detergent build up. Soak the items in Dawn then rinse thoroughly. It may be a good idea to switch detergents, use less detergent, or fill your load less full to prevent future detergent build-up.
Wool items:
All wool items must be hand washed with wool wash in warm
(not hot) water and laid flat to dry.
All items will arrive washed and lanolized and ready to be worn. After
an item has been peed on, separate the absorbent layer from the wool
and hang the wool item until it has dried. After about two weeks of use
or when the wool item begins to smell or is soiled, wash and re-lanolize the wool
item using a wool wash and lanolin. Here are some detailed
instructions:
Washing and Lanolizing Wool
Place the absorbent layer in the diaper pail and wash as
indicated for non-wool items.
If the wool item has been soiled, wash out the stain using a wool wash
or a wool wash bar. Depending on the size of the stain you may decide
to wash and re-lanolize the whole item or simply hang it to dry until
the small washed spot dries.
Apple Dumpling Gear wool products have been thoroughly heat set and fixed with vinegar, bleeding during washing or wearing should not occur. Please take note that some essential oils when combined with wool wash/soap may cause the dye to bleed. The dye will stop bleeding when the wool is dry. If you find that this is a problem make sure to wash like colors together and/or use unscented wool wash. If you are using scented Apple Dumpling Gear lanolin, wash and lanolize your wool separately or choose a fragrance oil instead of an essential oil. Additionally, the chemicals in urine can also cause dye to bleed if the dyed wool is allowed to get saturated with urine. Please make sure to use adequate absorbency in your diaper, underneath your Apple Dumpling Gear wool, and change frequently if this is a problem.
