Cloth Diaper Care Information

****EMBROIDERED DIAPERS ARE TO BE DRIED ON LOW OR HUNG DRY.**

Diaper Care Info:

You will be sent manufacturer instructions with your first order of any of our diapers. Their method instructions vary a little. We have found that the following method works for us for all of our cloth diapers, as they are all made of comparable materials:

1.) Separate diaper from inserts. Fold back laundry tabs (if present).

3.) Run diapers and inserts through a cold rinse

4.) Wash diapers hot with 1/4 to 1/2 a recommended detergent*. We have had best results with Allen's Naturally.

5.) Diapers can be dried on low or hung dry (which I prefer...they dry SO QUICKLY!) Bum Genius One-size cloth diapers are not to be dried in the dryer.

6.) Inserts can be hung dry or dried hot (which I prefer). Hemp products should either be dried in dryer or fluffed there before line drying.

*Detergents to use: Some great detergents are Allen's Naturally, Cheer Free and Clear and Arm and Hammer detergent without fragrance. ALWAYS Avoid Lanolin, fragrance and pure soap detergents (as these products tend to leave a build-up on diapers that hinders their effectiveness). Also avoid fabric softeners and bleach!

Solutions for diaper cleaning issues:

LEAKY DIAPERS / DETERGENT BUILD-UP:

This problem may be caused by an improper fit so please check for gaps to adjust in your child's diaper. Also make sure that the diapers are stuffed with enough inserts! If you have eliminated the other possible causes chances are that your diapers have detergent build-up. You can fix this by running your diapers through a hot wash with Allen's Naturally detergent or your usual detergent with a little degreasing dish soap added. Follow the wash with as many rinses as it takes for the rinse water to be free of suds.

DIAPER CREAM BUILD UP:

Diaper cream should not be used with these diapers, unless you use a liner. If you choose to use them anyhow, a product called Simple Green may help or eradicate the water-proof build-up that has resulted. Simple Green is a degreaser. Many people have had luck in removing diaper cream by applying this to their diapers, scrubbing them, and then washing as usual.

STINKY DIAPERS:

Diapers often stink because they either did not get clean enough or because a detergent film is reacting with the urine that they collect. Cleaning them again or using the detergent build-up solution (found above) may work. Adding vinegar or baking soda to your wash may also help. Some diaper manufacturers suggest a downy ball of vinegar.

STAINED DIAPERS:

Suede cloth and micro fleece are so resistant to stains that this ought not to be too prevalent of a problem. If it does occur, the best cure for stained diapers is the sun. Line drying your diapers in the sun works wonders. Adding baking soda to your wash also helps! Some people and manufacturers say that using oxyclean hydrogen bleach) is alright, but as this is still bleach we recommend only using this option occasionally. Bleach does break down the fabrics that make up these diapers.
